Sewing a silk dress for my besty
Hello Hive
It is graduation week in this town and almost everyone will be out partying. Right from the preliminary school down to the high school and the university students are graduating school. Parents, teachers and guidance are also involved in the celebrations. Everyone will be stepping out in some attractive outfits, you don't have to break the bank to look nice hence we try to work around people's budget while making them some new clothes.
I remember blogging about how I have about 7-8 fabrics from my friends and teachers who are all asking for me to sew their outfits. The deadline to deliver those outfits is Thursday as most of the parties will be starting by Friday. I was able to sew about 5 of the 8 outfits and still left with 3 more to go. I hope that within the next 72hrs I will be able to get the remaining outfits ready.
This particular outfit goes for one of my friends who is also a teacher. She will be wearing a two piece outfit. An inner plain black silk dress with the outer jacket which I had used an African print fabric to make this earlier. Its a touch of both modern and traditional style sewn together.
I have sewn the jacket before now and today I decided to complete the outfit and get it out of the way.
The silk dress gave me quite a headache. After cutting the fabric I had wanted to add some lining to the dress, I went ahead to cut out a lining in a similar manner and used it to sew and turn the necklines of the dress but the lining and fabrics keeps going in different direction, it was then I realized that some fabrics pose some form of difficulty when trying to sew them with a lining. I then pulled out the lining
Created a simple darts on the clothes
Here is the back bodice with zipper allowance
Turned the necklines and armholes with a bias here
I have that the fabric is such a frail ones and keeps pulling out which subsequently reduced the measurements of the dress. I am just hoping that this will still fit my friend well.
Hopefully I will purchase a weaving machine soon to help me lock the edges of machines like this for better finishing of clothes.
Got a zipper and fixed it to the dress
Created and sew a neat hemmings and the silk dress is ready.
The dress will be serving as a camisole for the after African print fabric Jacket.
Here is what the combination will look like together.
It's looks good.
This is elegant, befitting of your teacher friend as well. I'm sure she will like her outfit. Frail fabrics can be so annoying. Good, you will be finding a solution with the weaving machine.
It looks pretty! For sure your friend loves it.
Truthfully, silk dress are always difficult to sew
I remember when my sewing machine wasn't so good I was left frustrated with a silk fabric I couldn't even do anything with it
And trying to use a lining on it won't be any easier.
Your work is great and awesome
