Upcycling Leftover Fabric into a Cute Baby Pinafore Skirt
There is no waste, I tell myself this every day whenever I have leftovers, and indeed, something useful is usually made from this seemingly wasted fabric.
Sometime last week I shared about making a comfy jumbo pant for my cousin, the latest mum in our family, I went further to make a jumpsuit and dress from the same fabric for her cute baby girl, from my calculations, the yards of fabric I bought should be enough for all I had planned to make for her and her little one, but there was still a little piece left of the fabric after making all, and the minimalist in me didn't dare throw the leftover fabric.
What I did instead was to become creative on how to manage the leftover piece to make another simple and cute outfit for our little baby, whose name is Ariel, after not too much thinking, I'm sure I'm not the only one who drafts and sews with her mind to completion before getting into action, this is to ensure I don't miss out on anything or run shortage of fabric in this case.
I settled for a pinafore flare skirt since it belonged to a baby, the leftover pieces were just enough to make this cute skirt. I'm sure you will find the making process easy to follow as I had fun making this last-minute decision outfit for my niece and it didn't even take much time to get it done. Without further ado, let's get right into the making process.
Materials Used
- Ankara fabric
- Elastic band
- button
- sewing thread
Cutting And Sewing Process
- The first process was to fold the fabric into four folds, first, by sides, then followed by up to down fold, then I determined the radius and length of the waist, the radius in this case is her waist measurement, but I added extra inches, so she it can be adjusted as she grows, you know how babies grow so fast. Here is what the cut-out circle looks like.
- Next. I cut out a band for the skirt, which measures 3 inches and 1.5 inches on the fold
- I sewed the band case and passed the elastic band measuring 14 inches through it, the length of the band measures the same as the circle radius, which is 28 inches.
- Continuing, I sewed the band to the flare, and joined both ends, the skirt is already formed here.
- Next, I sewed these two gold buttons on the front sides of the skirt
Then proceeded to cut out the pinafore band, which also measures 3 inches and 1.5 inches on fold, I also made buttonholes at one end.
- Here, I have sewn the two bands to the two sides of the back of the skirt, finally, the cute baby skirt pinafore is ready, and made an extra gift I didn't plan for. So you see, there is no such thing as waste, instead think of creative solutions, and you would be shocked with what you come up with, which might even be better than the original plan.

This is really cute. And it's beautiful to see that you have well managed the fabric to go round a good number of people. They can now all wear their beautiful matching clothes. Well done ma and thanks for sharing.
Thank you sis🥰 didn't expect to get so much from the fabric.
Thank you❤
WOW! What you did with the left over materials, that's impressive. Completely agree with the statement - there is no waste. When you know what to do, you will find a way to make something useful. Well done!
