Sewing a Demure and Pretty Side-Gathered Dress
A wonderful day to you all, dearest hivers.
I hope all your endeavours for the week are going as planned; if not, don't worry, keep trying, everything will fall in place eventually.
These were the exact same words I told a young friend of mine who had been seeking admission into the university for some years now after completing her secondary education. She felt downcast seeing all her mates already in the university while hers was still pending. It's easy for young boys and girls to get misled at this point in their lives, so I encouraged her to learn a skill while waiting and not to give up.
It was a happy moment when she visited and told me that she had finally secured admission into one of the prestigious universities in the country. I was so happy for her; she listened to my advice and learned how to make hair during the wait. Now, not only is she going to be an undergraduate, but a skilled one, and would definitely make ends meet with her skills in school.
She would be leaving next week, so I thought to make her some pretty dresses to take to school, one of which I would be sharing the making process with us today. A long length side gathered dress made with flowery crepe material, she had admired the one I made recently for a fellow hiver some few weeks back when she came visiting, the reason I chose to make a similar style for her, with a round neckline.
Without further ado, let's get right into the making process.
Materials Used
Soft, flowery crepe fabric
Matching coloured thread
Zipper
Cutting And Sewing Process
- I started by cutting out the front gown pattern on fold, cutting out the round neckline of 3 by 6 inches. I also trimmed out the side curve, extending the length of the gown to full length.
- Next, I cut out the back pattern, which has two pieces, because I would be adding a zipper to the back
- Continuing, I turned in the front and back neckline using the bias strip.
- I also joined the front and back sides by the side
- Then I sewed in a zipper to the backside of the dress.
- Using the cut-out pattern of the gown, I slashed and spread it before cutting out the side that will be gathered to the gown
- Finally, I cut out a short basic sleeve which I sewed around the armholes of the dress, and hemmed the base of the dress as well.
Ada's beautiful side gathered dress is ready, looking demure and pretty. I hope this gift encourages her more to behave and study well in school as well.
