A Gateway Amongst the People

Musqueam artist Susan Point crafted a series of gateways located near Brockton Point in Stanley Park. Made of wood, the gateways showcase Coast Salish architecture in what is called People Amongst the People. They depict masks, animals, mythic creatures, and so forth. I found one of them (as shown in these photos) and saw another one from a distance. I’m afraid I didn’t do it proper justice in these shots because I only captured the inner portion of the structure, but I hope you got a feel for it.

What interesting portals and how much art there is there, they are ideal for inventing many stories. Very nice!
A lot of their art is based on their stories, like Raven who is known for releasing the sun and the moon after stealing it.
Those stories are beautiful, I wonder what things they would see or how they would interpret things to make those stories.
They have an oral tradition that is very communal, so in addition to carvings, they would also use singing, dancing, and spoken word to transmit their stories. It's very neat learning about it.
It's always interesting what you bring, I love it!
