Huge KE Ratio and Hive Power Discussion! .:. Recap of Hive Humpday Hangout SE #15 (May 21, 2025)

avatar

When I look back at the day we did this show, I remember I was on the verge of canceling it as I had a huge headache and wasn't feeling well at all... Luckily, I didn't do that and we had an awesome 1.5-hour-long show which helped me with my headache... At the end of it, I was feeling much better! The #HHHLive cures people! 😃

Usually, in similar cases like this one, when I don't expect a lot from something, it turns out to be much better than expected! Yes, these shows are freestyle, non-scripted, and anyone from the audience/participants can drop their topic to the show, but this time, people were shy... So, I had to drop that elephant in the middle of the room and we discussed the KE Ration almost the whole show, combined with the talk about Hive Power... As these things are heavily correlated (KE Ratio = Rewards (author+curation)/Stake (HivePower)), it was a good moment to talk about both things...

Liotes Divider Blue.png

In the beginning, I shared my opinion about the KE Ratio, and how I don't think it's a black and white thing... We can't judge people ONLY by this metric, especially without knowing the reasons and circumstances behind it... KE Ration is just one of the "metrics" on HIVE, and maybe if it is combined with others, it can send a message about some Hivian, but definitely, not just as "one metric to replace them all"...

The ice-breaker in the show was @godfish, who jumped first on the mic, sharing his views about the KE Ratio... He mentioned the possible reason why certain people power down, and how it is acceptable to use HIVE for living, especially in countries hit by poverty... He also mentioned how many of those accounts depend on upvotes by big curation projects (out of their community, external projects), which led to the discussion about growing the community's stakes!

As we moved a bit into talk about Hive Power, @jza came to the mic sharing his experience with newbies, and their misunderstanding of Hive Power... Because of that, we get an image that newbies don't care about the HP!

Along with people talking on mic, we had a very busy chat channel during the show, as many participants were commenting on things that were said, in written form... It was great to see almost everyone in the show sharing their view about this important topic!

Liotes Divider Blue.png

Somehow we dived into the content creation too... @godfish shared the most obvious thing that many forget... You should create content that YOU would like to CONSUME! Simple as that! If even you wouldn't read a post that you write, what's the point?

What's the point of Hive Power? Why should I buy and stake HIVE?, those were the questions that @jza asked in his name, and in the name of people who join HIVE... The answer is probably personal and subjective, but it depends on your ROLE on HIVE and your goals! Are you an investor, a blogger, or something else... Different goals have different approaches to using HP!

@achim03 came later to the show, but he also shared his view about the KE ratio in voice... In his opinion, it is short-sighted and it seems like a metric created to justify the HIVE price drop... and like a witchhunt to blame for bad HIVE performance...

It was great to read the comments from others in the chat, and one of them was @bil.prag's comment where he shared that he likes the 50-50 distribution as you can spend half of your earnings, but, by default, you can keep the rest staked for the long term, the future...

All in all, we had many great views and opinions about the KE Ratio and Hive Power during the show! The most important thing was to accept that we have different views, and to respect other opinions! I hope we succeeded in that, and I hope you will join us in the next #HHHLive shows as we want to hear your opinion, too!

Liotes Divider Blue.png

These Special Edition shows are not recorded, so if you want to participate in the live discussion, I would strongly recommend you to join the future shows! This was just a short recap of things we discussed, but the whole discussion was much broader!

We had 18 participants (including myself)... Thanks, @achim03, @antisocialist, @bulkathos, @honeydue, @daddydog, @duskobgd, @godfish, @friendlymoose, @incublus, @jza, @bil.prag, @mayor-001, @melinda010100, @stresskiller, @palomap3, @thekittygirl, and @travoved! Thanks, everyone, for participating!!!

Liotes Divider Blue.png

Thank you, guys and girls, once again! As a sign of appreciation, I will send some LEN tokens to all participants of the live show! You can pair them with LENM tokens, add liquidity to the diesel pool, and earn rewards! If you want to learn more about the project behind it, check out the @liotes account or visit the Liotes website... Of course, if you are not interested in it, you can sell tokens on the Hive-Engine market...

To encourage more people to come on the mic, I have sent an additional 100 Ecency POINTS to people who shared their thoughts on the mic with us (this time, we had 4 participants in voice)! So POINTS are going to @stresskiller (he had a good will to join in mic, but he had technical issues), @godfish, @jza, and @achim03!

Special thanks goes to @melinda010100 and @good-karma for providing the space for the event!

Thank you for your time.

I think it is today possible for someone who has activitely been here since the first times of HIVE (Steemit back then) to live off HIVE. My plan is to meet some of my expenditures by HIVE as well, it is early though :)

I'm not an everyday creator, and I accumulated a nice amount of HP... If I were to live in Venezuela, or some other countries that have lower life expenses, I would probably be able to live from my HIVE income...
Checking some other ORCAs, who are better creators than I, it is possible to do what you said!

It sounds like an interesting talk and I would have liked to hear the arguments over a summary. I agree that the 50/50 is the best payout pattern. I leave the powered up portion alone and the rest can be used on games/other tokens in the ecosystem.

If everyone would just leave their stake and spend HBD, this place would be much healthier and more decentralized!

I agree with you KE is not black and white, one needs to consider a whole picture and the user behavior too... Like the normal reputation right? Doesn't really mean a lot except it received a lot of upvotes from high rep accounts

Yup... Reputation can be skewed too... Occasionally, we have been reminded about that when some big account is caught cheating... 😃

When you land in Spain, do you leave your plane dancing? 😃 It's possible to "survive" here EVEN if you don't dance... 🤣
But, you have to like paella, ham, sangria, good wine, etc... 😃

This week's show was a lot of fun. I love to see people talking about Hive.

When people talk and discuss HIVE, it means that they care about it!! When we stop doing it, I would worry...
Thanks for participating and doing your part for HIVE! 💪

I feel judging people with KE ratio is against our narrative of HIVE.

We sell narrative for onboarding in Hive that you can earn on Hive. They earn and spend, and we put the KE ratio in the profile to shame them.
So what is the point of earning for them when they cannot spend?

On a side note, it pinches and pinches hard when you see the price of Hive dropping.

Tbh, I don't like "our HIVE narrative" that was used from the very beginning... "Come here and earn crypto by blogging"... HIVE is much more than just throwing out posts every day and harvesting rewards... It makes me sad to see newbies coming to the platform, creating generic content in the hope of earning big money... But you are right, they were "sold" on that story, it looks like we are deceiving them...
Nobody told them to engage, to use it as any other social media platform, to have fun, to support others, etc. We need to change our "onboarding strategy"...

I agree with BIL PRAG, I wish I was also available to talk about this too. It's a controversial topic and just like FELIXX will always say "the KE was always available for everyone who looked" as was only a metric

In a nutshell, it's just a simple number which existed before, but it wasn't presented "right in the face", as it's now on Peakd...

As I understand, most people are afraid that it will change the way big curation projects work, but that's not true... Most of them had already "rules" about upvoting content from people who don't engage, take out all their rewards, etc...

It will not change a lot... as it was present before...

It is good to read that there are many points of view about it. The KE is just a number, it is necessary to analyze what is behind it, it cannot be seen in isolation. There are many of us, especially in countries with precarious economies that see endless opportunities in Hive. Some always take everything, others sometimes and the rest, when it is absolutely necessary. Ideally, we should realize that it is better to do it in the healthiest way possible. If HIve is fine, we will all be fine too, I think there is a lack of awareness about that. I don't believe that people take their profits to cause damage or destroy the ecosystem, they do it by force majeure, to survive. So it is time to think and become aware. If we continue like this, the time will come when there will be nowhere to take from, neither too much nor too little. The 50-50 distribution is perfect, healthy and helps everything and everyone. We must adopt it as a premise even if we are free to do with our earnings what we want, but that will ensure a tomorrow. It is better a little every day than nothing at all.

Of course that people don't want to destroy it, but they should be aware of the consequences if EVERYONE did the same as them...

100% agree with you on that! Do you REALLY have to take out ALL? What about tomorrow, the day after tomorrow? What if you CAN'T write posts in the future? It would be nice to have some passive income from inflation and curation rewards... It doesn't matter if you are poor or rich, the lack of long-term thinking will keep you in the same place... You will never grow if you think about short-term gains only...

Thanks for sharing your view! Appreciate it!! 🙏
