These waterlily photos were taken last weekend during a visit to the Chicago Botanical Garden. The garden proved to be a treasure trove for photographers on this beautiful sunny early autumn day!

Waterlilies are rooted in soil underwater and rhizomes send long, flexible stems up toward the sunlight. They require full sun and relatively calm water.

The Nymphaeaceae family totals eight genera and about 70 species. And the Chicago Botanical Garden displays several of them!

The garden dyes the water in the displays black to provide a more effective way to showcase these beautiful blossoms and hide the underwater pots the plants are growing in. The dark water also helped to add more drama to the photos!

There are also many waterlilies that bloom at night and are very fragrant to attract pollinators, but these are all daytime bloomers.

Hope you enjoy the photos!

I love how you could capture the working bees on the waterlilies as well. It adds cuteness in the lovely blooming lilies flower. : )

Omg! 😱 These water lilies look so wonderful. I like the uniqueness of each flower even though they are of the same family.

So far, this is the only one I've found here in Singapore. Just sharing. 😊

That is a beauty! Most of these are tropical plants and more difficult for gardeners to grow here in the north

!INDEED they're beautiful :)

I've seen hundreds of these flowers bloom at the same time, and I was amazed by the sight.

Our native hardy water lilies are white ones and yellow ones, so these colorful beauties seem quite exotic!

We have 4 colors here that I've observed: white, purple, pink, and yellow, but I'm not quite sure if they're all native here.

It has become part of my yearly routine to visit places with lots of these water lilies during the blooming season. 😊

Those are such pretty flowers! I've never had a pond to try and grow them myself, but they are beautiful! I bet the Chicago Botanical Garden is an amazing place!

Beautiful waterlilies. I love the idea of dying the water black to provide contrast for the colorful flowers 🙂

You have taken very beautiful pictures of these flowers. I think the dark water is an effect created by nature itself, as perhaps these flowers cannot grow in clear water, but rather they require moss and soil. Truly, for plant lovers, the place is no less than heaven. :)

I haven't spotted any water lilies up here. We have no shortages of swamps and ponds. Maybe it is too cold or maybe the moose make a meal of their roots.

Some beautiful shots, Melinda:)
