Stepping back in time
The grand house of William Morrison Tallman, a renowned lawyer and abolitionist is now a museum in Janesville Wisconsin that once hosted a short stay from Abraham Lincoln in 1859.
My next door neighbor Vickie, who works at the museum, dressed in period costume and allowed a private tour and photo shoot. More images can be seen in previous posts. HERE and HERE
Vickie, seated on the front porch.
The ellipise seems to provide ventilation and allowed heat to rise to the unheated 2nd floor.
When the Tallmans built the house they installed gas lighting even though it would be 12 years before gas became available in Janesville. Today the house and the gasolieres have been wired for electricity.
William Henry did not follow in his father’s political footsteps, instead purchasing a stake in a local drugstore business. By 1857, Tallman was running the company and took on Collins as his new partner. Initially, Tallman and Collins was a wholesale business, selling medicine, d chemicals, toothpaste, plasters and scented oils . By 1864, Tallman expanded the business to include manufacturing a new line of perfumes and extracts, eventually focusing solely on perfume manufacture. Tallman perfumes and colognes were incredibly popular in the 1870s, but the company closed in 1883 due to William’s poor health.
After the tour, back in the parking lot, Vickie hitched up her skirt and untied the hoops that allowed women to achieve the fashionable fullness of their skirts with fewer layers of petticoats, making them lighter and more comfortable... But not conformable for climbing up into her pick up truck and driving home! A man stopped at a nearby traffic light seemed rather astonished by the sight, even though her pantaloons discreetly covered her legs!

Incredible level of preservation of the house.
The Historical Society has done a great job. They have purchased the old home next door to house the archive library, a gift shop and temporary exhibits.
I like the ellipse that provide ventilation. So cute are all the photos with Vickie. And before I forgot, that dress looks awesome on her.
@melinda010100, this post is better than picking up a shelter journal when queuing at the grocery store.
What camera 📷 are you using? The photos are so gorgeous!
I can see why you’d need to remind people to leave your work here. Your skill is enviable!!
I’m sharing your post to the #cwh-hive-post channel on our community Discord so crew not yet on Hive can enjoy it as I have.
So well done!!! 👏🏽
Thanks for the kind words! These photos are from my family albums that my kids work at keeping filled with great photos for me to use in my posts. My daughterinlaw took these with her Sony ILCE-7M3. I am so lucky to have incredible photographers in the family since my MS prevents me from getting out of the house these days. I'm glad you enjoyed the photos! I think taking photos for my posts allows everyone in the family to keep improving photographic skills!
Then your whole family should be congratulated. So professionally photographed.
Thank you for sharing the camera model.
Your posted on CWH Discord, too!
Ella does a great job and credits my insatiable need for photos for my Ecency posts with her interest in photography! She knows I will find a way to use any pictures that she takes and it gives her incentive to take more!
Thakes for sharing this in your Discord!
Lovely
Thanks

I put the links to the other two posts at the beginning of the post. I hope we get to return again to get more photos of the kitchen and other rooms we missed this time. I'm sure we can talk Vickie into wearing a different dress!
Greetings, hopefully you can take another walk there and take pictures of the places that you could not visit previously.
Yes, I saw the other two posts you put together, commented on them and voted on them. That will be the post that I made of the visia, I liked them very much.

Such beautiful photos you have shared with us here.!
I like so much to see these carpets, walls, ceilings, etc, it's like watching an old movie.
God bless you friend @melinda010100.
It is a pity that he has to struggle with multiple sclerosis. I wish you the best of health.
Thanks so much, dear @gertu It's always so good to hear from you! Hope your garden is doing well.
I'm managing and appreciate everyone here that keeps me busy and entertained!
Thank you my dear Melinda. My garden is struggling with a lot, lack of watering, proliferation of pests and others. I try to keep it afloat but it is getting stronger and stronger.
I love gardening but the dust kicked up by the soil from planting is affecting my lungs. It gives me coughs, nasal allergies and secretions, but I keep going strong in my garden. The years don't pass in vain.
I wish you to continue in what you have planted.
Oh that's sad to hear, but probably common issues for many gardeners. You have a wonderful collection of plants, I hope you find a way to continue. I have a few plants now, but not as many as in the past.
I can't be without my plants but now I'm looking for help to plant and not have problems with my bronchial tubes, hehe. I keep sowing my plants or I ask the gentleman who works me here to help me sow them but then I am the one who checks them, transplants them, loves them forever. A loving hug.
Wow,the dress looks perfectly fit to your neighborhood vickie. You guys must lucky to have a picture inside the museum.
She has several carefully researched costumes in her wardrobe. I'm hoping we get to do a return visit for more photos and see her wearing some of her other dresses!
Thanks for sharing. The story is interesting, and the photos illustrate everything well.

Beautifully told, its almost as if you were telling a memmory... wait! are you one of those misterious northern vampires they tell about, those that never grow old and are constantly changing sites and identity?
And I just figure it out?
😆
... This could be a good start for an american horror story
I don't think that's possible, since I have definitely already grown old! 😁❤️
So you say, but Im not so sure. I see you here very active and diligent, that's a feature of an ever young person
Thanks! Your comment made me feel younger today.... And maybe a bit vampirish!
Jajajajajaja. I new it!!!
😂❤️😂
Have a lovely day today!
That is a very interestign story about the faily and the house, the family must be really wealthy at the time isn't it?
But I am wondering, how heaving is her wardrobe? It must be not as comfortable as the modern clothing isn't it?
!PIZZA !LUV
The family was definitely upper class!
I think the dress Vickie was wearing was probably pretty heavy, but also necessary in our cold northern climate in homes that were not always well heated.
Bonita casa, y excelente presentación con las imágenes, espectaculares @melinda010100 😍!!
Gracias! ❤️

So sad that the company was closed due to William's health. I'm sure the family had enough savings and investment at that time.
😃I can imagine the look on the man's face at the traffic, her costume is quite unique and beautiful
The Tallman family resided in the house from its completion in 1857 until 1915.
After their granddaughter Nellie Tallman moved out in 1915 (at age 76), the house sat empty and abandoned for 35 years.
In 1950, George K. Tallman (William Henry's second son) and his wife Alice Jessie MacGregor donated the historic homestead to the City of Janesville. 75% of the furnishings are original to the house.
It was funny to see the man watching Vickie remove the hoops from under her skirt and put them in the back of her truck!
😃😃
The dresses that ladies used to wear and the dresses they wear now are not comparable at all.
That's for sure! Styles changed and central heating probably helped make those heavy fabrics unnecessary.
Wow! The Tallman House is a place where time truly stands still. Vickie brought authenticity and charm to the moment. Great shots!
Thanks! 75% of the furnishings are original to the house, so it really is like time stood still! Vickie is a wealth of knowledge and really brings everything to life.
Truly impressive! You're welcome.😍
You wrote an exceptional post and told it all so beautifully. The photos are stunning. In this post, you've shown us history, architecture, and a glimpse into everyday life. Vickie's period costume is wonderful. It makes me want to visit Janesville and enter the Tallman house. !LADY

Wow, awesome photos of the house museums. I love things from the past like this. What a wonderful treat and privilege to get a private, personal tour.
Thanks! I love these types of historical sites too! All the photos were donated to the Historical Society and I wouldn't be surprised to see them on future promotional materials.
I can absolutely see why they would want to use them. Are you a professional photographer? If not, why not? LOL
Actually these are photos from my family album where my kids put the photos they take with the intention of me creating posts to share on Hive! My daughter in law is the one who should be a pro photographer! I agree that she is good enough and would love to see her persue a career... Maybe we can all convince her that she is good enough! She feels like she has more to learn. She doesn't do social media, but occasionally stops by here to read comments
Wow, the photos are really great! I hope your daughter-in-law gets to see these comments. If you’re reading this: your work shows a natural eye for composition and detail, every shot feels thoughtful and beautifully framed. If you aren’t already working as a professional photographer, you definitely have the talent for it. I hope you’ll consider sharing your skills with a wider audience, the world could use more of your creativity!
I'll make sure she sees your delightful comment!
Ella's reply.... "Thank you so much for the incredibly kind words"
Of Course, I totally mean it!
My wife is a great photographer. It comes from great care of both composition and observing the lighting that is offered by the moment. Thank you for appreciating her work.
Eloquent architecture such beauty 😊

What a beautiful home he built! That's really an amazing place, and it's great they converted it into a museum. Your neighbor Vickie went all out with that costume, that was really cool. That was fascinating that they prepped the house for gas lighting even though the gas lines wouldn't arrive for another twelve years. What an amazing and beautiful place!
