Elon Musk's history is just average among lucky successful billionaires [EN/PT]

Musk’s father lent him the equivalent of about 60K USD today's money to start his career.

He founded Zip2 with his brother, where he did quite a bit of programming.

Compaq bought Zip2 for a good sum of money, and Musk walked away with $22 million.

Soon after, the investors removed him as CEO because they didn’t trust his lack of experience.

He founded X.com, which failed in almost every respect. The rival company, Confinity, was doing well because it had a well-built product.

Confinity wanted to merge with X.com because of Musk’s investment, and they became PayPal. It was Confinity’s product that made PayPal a success.

Musk was removed from the CEO position again.

He stayed on at PayPal as a programmer and major investor. He contributed some good ideas.

With Peter (and not Musk) running PayPal, the company grew exponentially until eBay bought it, which gave Musk $165 million.

After that, he started SpaceX, which couldn’t succeed financially on its own and was almost going bankrupt when NASA decided to hire the company. From then on, things started to work out.

At Tesla, things generally flowed better.

Life summary: He only really started having stable success at 37 years old. He’s good with vision… But without the 60K USD his dad lent him to start his career, he wouldn’t have gotten anywhere. On top of that, he became a programmer at a time when that was the rarest and most valuable thing possible. But yes, today he does good work at Tesla and SpaceX, with the help of many experts.

And even if he had failed, Musk wouldn’t have gone back to rags. His father was on his way to becoming a millionaire. Poverty was never really on the table.

He’s just a relatively smart guy who spots market opportunities and likes taking risks, which is fine, but that's far from the genius or prodigy image fans like to paint of him.

Ele é só um cara relativamente esperto que vê oportunidades de mercado e que gosta de correr riscos. A história do Silvio Santos, sim, que é genial.
