Discovering Korea Through K-dramas

Before I stumbled on KDramas, the only thing I knew about Korea was that it's a country on the Asian continent. To me, it was one of those places on the map, and I thought they all looked like the Chinese. Seriously, I wasn’t really curious about them until I stumbled upon K-dramas, and that changed my perspective entirely.

The first K-drama I ever watched was Boys Over Flowers, which I have mentioned here before, and this was an eye-opener. From the very first episode, I was struck by how beautiful all the actors were, and they all had beautiful body structures. It wasn’t just about their looks—although I can't deny they were very attractive—it was the way they carried themselves. They all seemed so youthful, polished, and vibrant.

The first thing that caught my attention was their sense of style. I loved how they were so intentional with fashion, but it wasn’t just about their clothes and dress sense. I also notice how they were intentional about their overall appearance. They had glowing and flawless skin; even their facial features seemed so well-defined. This showed how they took their skincare routines seriously.

Boys Over Flowers sparked my curiosity about the Koreans. As I continued to watch more K-dramas, the more I was getting a glimpse into the lives of Koreans. Another thing that stood out for me was their cuisine. I noticed how visually appealing and vibrant their dishes were and the communal aspect of eating together.

Their language was another thing that caught my attention. At first it sounded strange to me, but later I realized that I have started recognizing phrases and expressions that are often repeated in different dramas. Words like "oppa," "unni," "saranghae," and "gomawo" started feeling familiar.

Korea has a lot of breathtaking locations that have been featured in these dramas. One place that I would really want to visit when I get to visit South Korea is Jeju Island, because of how they often depict it as a romantic getaway or a serene escape. It has natural beauty.Another place would be the Hanok villages because of their traditional architectural design. I would also want to visit Seoul mostly because I want to feel and experience the vibrant nightlife there.

It’s just so funny how watching a TV series can spark a whole new appreciation for a country and its people.
