Blood, Beats & Betrayal... My Take on K‑Pop Demon Hunters
I have to admit, the first part of the title “K‑Pop” didn’t sound appealing to me at all since I’m not really a fan of that genre. Not that I hate it; I just prefer listening to other types of music. But the second part, “Demon Hunters”, caught my interest and made me want to give the movie a shot, though I wasn’t expecting much.
So why did I even bother to watch it? Well, it’s because of the Korean Hive Village community’s contest. This week’s prompt is to review the Netflix movie K‑Pop Demon Hunters, and I wanted to participate to show my support. Surprisingly though, I actually ended up enjoying the movie — LOL.
This is already my second time joining a KHV contest, and I’m glad I’m finally gaining some momentum. My first entry was about trying Korean food, and I’m excited to share that I won 3rd place in that contest. So now, I’m hoping for another win this time around 😄
As for my first impression of the movie, the animation style felt a bit odd at first. It’s quite different from the animation I’m used to. K‑Pop Demon Hunters was produced by Sony, while most of the animated films I’ve watched before were from Disney or Pixar. The style here feels a bit cartoonish or even anime-like. It threw me off at first, but after a few minutes, I got used to it, and by the end, I was really enjoying it.
Hmm, the story revolves around three main characters who, thanks to my wild imagination, instantly reminded me of the Powerpuff Girls when I first saw them. LOL. I honestly thought they looked a lot like them, so forgive me for the comparison. Maybe there is a bit of resemblance, but of course, these K‑Pop girls are definitely the cooler version!
Another reason I made the comparison is that, much like the Powerpuff Girls, these K‑Pop idols are also powerful and fight monsters or demons. But instead of a typical superhero world, they exist in a more unexpected setting that mixes K‑Pop stardom with demon-slaying. The story introduces an unusual twist where demonic forces find a way to reach the main characters through the world of K‑Pop, much like how rivalries and competition happen in real life.
Though I’m not entirely sure, it feels like the story may have been loosely inspired by real events or behind-the-scenes stories from the K‑Pop industry. There’s definitely a sense of commentary about fame, pressure, and rivalry hidden beneath the flashy music battles and action scenes.
Even though I mentioned earlier that I'm not a fan of K‑Pop, the tracks and performances in the movie actually worked for me. It wasn’t just the music itself but also how it was blended into the action sequences, especially as the superheroes fought off demons trying to consume human souls.
I’m trying my best not to reveal any major plot twists, but I do want to say that the message the story conveys feels very relevant in today’s world. Much like the main character and lead vocalist Rumi, who is literally fighting demons, she’s also battling her own inner struggles — a theme that many can relate to.
The same goes for the other two characters, Mira and Zoey. They each face their own personal demons and use those challenges as motivation to rise and shine in their careers, eventually reaching the height of stardom as shown in the film.
By the way, the dance scenes were really entertaining and were well integrated into the story’s progression. Just like real K‑Pop performances, there were twists and turns, not only in the choreography but also in how the heroes and villains interacted. It was fun to see how they started out as rivals, then almost became friends, and eventually had to team up to fight the true enemy. I won’t go into detail here because I don’t want to spoil the surprises. LOL.
Overall, the movie was entertaining, thanks to the fight scenes, the smooth story transitions, and the cool animation effects. However, I felt that some parts were a bit underwhelming — especially the final battle against the main demon boss. I was expecting a more intense and powerful showdown between the heroes and the ultimate villain. It started off scary, but by the end, the final boss felt nerfed to the point that it actually looked kind of weak. LOL.
The way it was presented felt a bit lackluster and toned down. It seemed like the creators focused more on the artistic value of the K‑Pop idol performances, which might have taken away from the energy and intensity of the final fight. And for someone like me who enjoys Michael Bay-style action and explosive battle scenes, I have to admit I was a little disappointed by how the final showdown played out. LOL.
Regardless of how I personally view K‑Pop, I still think this movie deserved the top spot in the Netflix rankings. It was entertaining and genuinely cool. It didn’t feel like something only hardcore K‑Pop fans would enjoy, because it had that familiar Western Hollywood-style production that I’m used to.
They also added humor by introducing a weird albino tiger demon and a quirky-looking crow, both of which were oddly adorable and made me laugh. I feel like they played an important role in the story, and I wouldn’t be surprised if other viewers turn them into memes or start recognizing them in a fun and iconic way.
I'm giving it a rating of...
Score: ★★★★☆ / 5
(For being entertaining, funny, and also because of its cool vibes!)

Wow, four times?! 😲 The songs really are addictive... I don’t even like K-Pop normally but now they’re stuck in my head too 😂
I watched it again until the end yesterday.
I'm amazed at how much love it's receiving.
Especially the songs—many singers are doing cover versions of them.
Totally agree... the music really grew on me too! I’m not even into K-Pop and still found myself humming along 😄
