Love Sonia (2018) [EN/ES]

Love Sonia is a film that, although it addresses a topic affecting millions of human beings, serves as both a reminder and a call to action for a tragedy as old as humanity itself but still prevalent today despite the little visibility it receives from governments around the world.

The story begins in a remote village in India, where poverty reigns and the only subsistence activity for many inhabitants is agriculture. However, droughts and climatic phenomena sometimes punish them, driving them into misery and desperation.

Due to poor harvests, a father becomes overwhelmed by debts owed to the village "master" and decides to sell one of his two daughters, under the illusion that she will be going to work.

Sonia, the other sister, discovers her father’s plan and begs him not to go through with it. If there’s no alternative, she pleads to be allowed to accompany her sister instead.

The father refuses because Sonia is strong, like a "bull," and indispensable labor for him. Thus, she avoids sharing her sister’s fate.

However, Sonia, devotedly loving her sister, refuses to stand idly by. She turns to the same man her father did, asking to be taken to "work" where her sister works.

This marks the beginning of Sonia’s painful journey, as she endures everything for the sole purpose of finding and "saving" her sister, who suffers the same fate as her.

This is a story that could very well mirror events happening daily in any country worldwide. Countries like India and other Asian nations report high numbers of such cases, often with authorities complicit in failing to protect victims.

The trafficking of people for sexual slavery, sadly, continues to be one of the most lucrative crimes globally, and it seems that no one is willing to eradicate it.

It's bothersome that trafficking still happens in this day and time. Certainly, I want to find out what becomes the fate of Sonia and her sister. Therefore, I'm off to see the movie. Thanks for sharing

Most times, when I see movies like these, I cry a lot. To think that people traffick other humans like themselves for money? It's saddening. From the synopsis alone, I already can tell that this movie will be heartbreaking. It's nice you shared it on here

I'm feeling same, but I guess is good that movies remember us the real life because we need to be alert and conscience about this terrible crimes to ask politicians to do something about! Thanks for your comment!

Less Bollywood bling, more gut-punch sting. Trafficking’s the vibe, with Mrunal (My Crush), Freida, and Demi Moore crashing the party. Watch it, but don’t blame me when your popcorn feels judged
