Rose of Versailles (2025)

On Tuesday, I came across a post about a Japanese visual kei symphonic power metal band called Versailles. I listened to some of their songs thanks to @tsukichan and then a while later I came across this anime called Rose of Versailles. I thought in my head that it might be like a tribute to this Versailles band and got interested quickly. I found out soon enough that this was based on the manga series and not at all about a band. Also, it is a musical, which made me twitch a little bit but some of the songs were nice. An example is Enchanting Masquerade. I liked that one a lot.

The Rose of Versailles is a Japanese animated musical romance film based on the 1972 manga by Riyoko Ikeda. It centers on four people; Oscar François de Jarjayes, a woman raised as a son and a general. Marie Antoinette, daughter of Austrian Empress destined to be queen. Hans Axel von Fersen, a Swedish aristocrat and Marie’s first love. André Grandier, Oscar’s childhood friend. These four would cross paths in Versailles, France in the 18th Century, following their hearts and living their stories right up to the French Revolution.

The first thing I noticed about this movie was how poorly paced it was. Everything was happening so fast and at some point it felt like it just stopped flowing but, for a movie of one hour and fifty-three minutes they did really well to encapsulate the whole five volumes of the manga series. Now, I haven’t read the manga but I did see some reviews about how pleasant it was.

The lives of Oscar and Marie were so different yet bore a striking resemblance if you dared to look closer. Marie would fall in love long after she was married and not with her husband, the King. Oscar would discover that there is more to living than the Royal palace. Their paths crisscrossed and yet bordered on different roads. I really liked it. Especially the visual and stunning artistry.

There were a lot of colours and a whole lot of singing but it wasn’t bad at all. The only thing that irked me was the pacing. That can be overlooked if I am being honest. From reviews of those who have read the manga, they did keep the core of it and didn’t overwrite its magic. This movie was a 7.5/10 for me. I wasn’t really a fan of the entire plot of it. However, it was a brilliant watch nonetheless.

I loved your post. Thank you for taking the time to listen to Versailles. And about this anime, its 1979 version was created by Versailles' vocalist Kamijo, who created the opening theme song for "Rose of Versailles." The song is called "Bara wa Utsukushiku Chiru." I highly recommend it; it's beautiful.

I really enjoyed reading your take on Rose of Versailles......maybe I will watch the movie...I like how you broke down the pacing issues but still gave it credit for capturing the manga’s core story.

Your review actually make me curious to check out both the movie and the manga. A very nice review
