Microsoft stellt Skype im Mai 2025 ein und bittet die User auf Teams umzusteigen. Die legendäre Video-App wurde 2003 in Estland entwickelt und wechselte in Folge mehrmals den Eigentümer, bis Microsoft die populäre App im Mai 2008 für damalige Verhältnisse unglaubliche 8.5 Milliarden Dollar übernahm.

Die Konkurrenz im Bereich Telefonie- und Video-Apps wurde aber immer größer und Skype verlor mit der Zeit an Popularität.

Hand auf Herz, wann habt ihr Skype das letzte Mal verwendet? Ist bei mir schon ein paar Jahre her. Verwende mittlerweile hautsächlich Telegram, Signal, Session und für Normies Facebook Messenger und Instagram. WhatsApp habe ich bis jetzt eher vermieden, überlege es aber zu installieren, da es alle verwenden.

Welche Messaging Apps verwendet ihr? Was sagt ihr dazu, dass Microsoft Skype einstellt? Warum denkt ihr, hat es Skype nicht geschafft relevant zu bleiben? Welche Fehler hat Microsoft gemacht oder war die Konkurrenz einfach zu groß?

Microsoft is discontinuing Skype in May and asking users to switch to Teams. The legendary video app was developed in Estonia in 2003 and changed hands several times until Microsoft acquired the popular app in May 2008 for an incredible 8.5 billion dollars at the time.

However, competition in the field of telephony and video apps grew and Skype lost popularity over time.

Hand on heart, when was the last time you used Skype? It's been a few years for me. I now mainly use Telegram, Signal, Session and, for normies, Facebook Messenger and Instagram. I've tended to avoid WhatsApp so far, but I'm thinking about installing it because everyone uses it.

Which messaging apps do you use? Why do you think Skype hasn't managed to stay relevant, why is it discontinued now? What mistakes did Microsoft make or was the competition simply too big?

Sometimes I write a message on facebook but most of the time I just don't talk with people period. I am most active here on Hive.

Signal, seltener Telegram und Discord und wenn es sich nicht vermeiden lässt WhatsApp.

Signal, ganz selten Telegram und der letzte Skypecall den ich mitbekommen habe war so um 2020 ( meine letze Nutzung ca. 2018 ).

Hallo, alle diese alternative sind mehr oder weniger interesant, aber, sobald ein App verlangt bei registrierung deine Mobile nummer -finger weg.

Ich verwende nur noch SimpleX (https://simplex.chat) und Jami (https://jami.net), da braucht man keine Mobile nummer, nichts. Beide sind dezentralisiert, modern, und activ in development.

SimpleX hat sogar Quantum Technologie resistänte schutz!

Ich verwende sogar kontakte auf meine Webseiten nur noch mit diesen Apps, auch Element, beispiel:

Aber, Skype, nääää, nein danke... mehr als 15 Jahre nicht mehr benutzt, auch kein Windows so lange. Nur Linux, und Open Source Apps.

msn messenger was great, skype wasn't the same, it never had revamps and such and lost too much on competition

I am using Skype for messaging and I think Microsoft wants to focus more on Teams

Danke fürs Bescheidsagen!
Für normales Messaging ist mir das egal. Ich frag mich immer, ob die Leute schon mal was von Email gehört haben...
Aber für Video Calls ins Ausland hab ich Skype benutzt. Aber da gibts ja auch Alternativen. Schon erstaunlich das Microsoft es einfach dicht macht. Aber natürlich können die es sich nicht leisten etwas zu betreiben was keinen Profit bringt. Das ist für die sowas wie seelische Grausamkeit.

I still use Skype from time to time, but things have changed. I think other applications such as Zoom and other things made the space more competitive. I think it just went out of date as they didn't really make any meaningful changes to keep users around.

Uff, dann kann ich endlich aufatmen. Seit der Übernahme durch Microsoft haben wir befürchtet, die stellen das auf .NET Technologie um und dann verschmelzen Skype und .NET zu SkyNet 🙄

Kann ja jetzt ab Mai nicht mehr passieren 😌

Interessant und ich habe es um 2020 das letzte mal Verwendet. Es ist eigentlich ein selbstverständliches Tool, nutzt aber anscheinend wirklich kaum jemand. Ich verwende gerne google meet up, Whats App, Telegram für Business. Signal habe ich aber verwende ich selten. Deto auch Discord, obwohl dort alle oder viele HIVE Channels zu finden sind.
