Buy European? Have you heard of the European alternatives, where is Europe weak, where strong?
Was sagt ihr dazu?

European alternatives for US-based products and services. Top or flop?
Europe, especially Germany, has traditionally been very strong in the automotive industry, but is currently losing ground with electric mobility. But I wouldn't write off the German car industry completely; perhaps they could make a comeback if they managed to manufacture better products at a lower price. Perhaps production would even have to be relocated abroad to achieve this.
Just like Apple does with its iPhones, for example. Cool product, but made in China to reduce production costs dramatically.
The US is leading in IT services, but there are at least a few European alternatives, especially from the open source scene such as LibreOffice, Mixtral or Proton Mail.
Linux was also originally developed in Europe, but has since become a global open source project.
Perhaps the division into American and European products and services is no longer entirely appropriate, as most companies rely on global supply chains anyway or are already global by nature such as many open source and crypto projects.
In my opinion, it would be more meaningful to look at the ownership structure: do the corporations belong more to European investors or large US funds such as Vanguard or Blackrock?
Perhaps some of the alternatives described as European would then actually be American?
What do you think? Can you think of any European alternatives that have not been listed? Is the division into European and American alternatives even possible and meaningful in the age of globalization?

Wow! If that's the best Europe can do its pathetic.
Europe industry is gone for good since a while, I wouldn't really trust it

I didn't know Proton Mail was European.
Seeing the list of European alternatives, they really could stand on its own
I miss Hive among the recommendations :)
Thought the same :)
Europe definitely has strong industries, but yeah, tech wise, the U.S. still dominates. I think the real question is, Can Europe innovate fast enough, or will it always play catch up with America. Also America is very self conscious about winning especially with Mr winning (Trump) in power.
Switching to local alternatives is both possible and meaningful. The effect from Austria alone may not have a big impact but when you combine it with the rest of the globe that's doing it - it starts to add up significantly.

Europa hat Potenzial
aber braucht Innovation und günstigere Preise.
Open-Source-Alternativen wie ProtonMail sind zumindest stark!
I live in Eastern Europe and I have not heard of a lot of those brands.

The world is so interconnected that I don't know if it makes sense. Many European defense companies actually have American shareholders.

I recently looked into that topic and was surprised about quite a few brands which I thought were american but are actually european or the other way around.
It's quite obvious though, that Europe is under represented in the IT sector as a whole. It would be quite hard to avoid services by Google, Microsoft or streaming providers like Netflix.
Haha. Seit 51 min online :-)
A company might be based in Europe, but if major US funds own a big chunk of it, is it truly European? Globalization makes these labels blurry

If European products match up to the US ones, it would only make sense to buy European. I live in the US and prefer products made here over China. But Europe has the corner on some great booze though in Scotch and Cognac, not to mentions wines and cheeses!
I don't know much about European companies, but I think that technology has changed quite a bit. I don't think the region matters as much unless you are selling directly there. Then again, companies could just start up a factory there, and save on shipping costs.
Ecosia is a European alternative to Google that I always try to use.
I hope this will be the start of European innovation, we should not only rely on other countries big companies for all our manufacturing and services.
