Bitwig Grid - Building your own synths

Welcome to the first post of mine for the HSL project in 2025 and we shall be curating a number of sounds this year using a multitude of techniques. Modular synthesis is a rabbit hole, especially when going down the hardware path, which is why I've decided to slow down on that front and instead explore some sound design on the computer via one of my favourite DAWs - Bitwig Studio and it's incredible grid.

This evening I started to build my own synth based on just a handful of modules, see the screenshot below.

I've recorded a chord sequence, see the Samply link at the bottom of the page for that. It sounds fat, it is huge and I am going to build more of these to come up with some awesome stuff this year.

Tutorial and walkthrough videos, plus other notes here on this community to chart my progress.

Why not join in?

Do you have similar knowledge about this and similar topics - give me a shout and we shall figure out the best ways of developing this community dedicated to sound design over the course of the year. I hope we can make something of it, like a sort o ModCaf on Hive, maybe host some virtual EMOM events on here.

I know almost nothing about modular synths but I find it so fascinating! I would like to have another whole life to explore this big world.

I don't think I can contribute to your project in practice but I'm following it for sure 😉

Thanks @harbiter that’s great to know you’ve got an interest and I’ve often considered myself a polymer of sorts. To be honest having a zillion different hobbies is a bit of a challenge!!

Being endlessly curious in everything. Good thing I’m not a cat!

Cool sounds man.

It's something I could definitely get into.

What's a good starting point? Any cool free software to mess about with?

Try Reaper or Logic Pro, as they have generous trial periods. I think they’re good ones to try out.

@ablaze maybe I should incorporate into my content plan for the year ahead a look into free software. It won’t be a main thing but I do get asked this quite often and I did start out with free software.

What kind of operating system do you use? Mac, windows etc?

You’re like me, various machines. I’ll do a post on software soon.
