When Disaster Strikes: Riding Out The Storm
Growing up, I actually thought natural disasters are a myth that we were made to believe because they happened a lot in the movies we saw then. I also didn't see the sense in our nature being against us, everything God created was good as He said in the Bible so it was a bit hard to believe.
Well, those thoughts have changed, not because I have experienced natural disaster before but because I've seen and heard of people who are survivors or had to live through such experience. These events were not only unexpected for those who had to deal with them, they were disastrous.
When I see these happen in the movies, I always wondered how they will survive after such an experience. But before that, I wonder why these things have to happen in the first place. Sadly, there's no working solution to stop natural disasters from happening but ways to live it out.
There are different natural disasters that have happened like volcano, earthquakes, storms, flood and fire. The most common one in my part of the world is flood. Although there are the natural causes of flooding here but it's most common that negligence and human common mistakes are also a cause for this water disaster.
I've only seen flood closely that weren't severe as just a whole street covered in dirty water because of bad drainage, people have to struggle to go in and out of the street, vehicles go bad when they are forced to pass the flooded places and some properties are lost. It's sad to see and even more sad that these things are caused by us, humans.
A most recent one I heard about was a family losing their home to fire outbreak from a source they are yet to figure out. They got out alive but every other thing was lost including important documents, I can't even imagine how hard it will become for them before they will get through all the lost they had to encounter so unexpectedly.
It's the rainy season here and it's like the clouds hold too much water and just keeps pouring out, flooding so many areas with bad drainage. Although I hear some people take advantage of this to open reserved water places causing the water to be more than normal in some areas. It's why I say humans also fuel the natural disasters.
One way to survive is by actually preventing such thing from happening in the first place and choosing carefully where to stay is an important step. Sadly, the Government has a lot of role to play in keeping every place safe from water disaster but in cases where they fail to do this, those living there have to step and get it done.
A family I know have to cross deep waters to go in and out of their house causing them to stay indoors most of the time, I'm not even sure what help they could get in such situation when nobody is coming out to help allow the water drain out into the gutters. I think with more deep and clear gutters, the floods can be prevented.

Your post is very thoughtful. It’s true that while some disasters are purely natural, human negligence often makes their impact worse.
The stori told by u in this post shows how unpredictable and life-changing these events can be.
Clean drainage, proper planning, and community responsibility can truly reduce the damage when nature “strikes.”
Yeah, it's really a sad situation.
If only we would take these preventive measures seriously.
Most of the floods that happened in Nigeria could have been avoided but our government just cares about themselves. While flooding is a natural disaster its effect would have been minimal in our country, most people in this affected area can't even help themselves even if they want to because of the lack of drainage system.
The affected areas are in serious trouble especially in this season, it's really sad.
Yea, so sad
Although flood is a natural disasters but in Nigeria cause is the government negligence that causes it. If only the just do the needful, we won't be in this situation
Sadly, we would have to wait for a never if we would rely on the government to come solve the issue.
Honestly
When it comes to natural disaster, I have seen some but I never face any significant consequences for it. I should consider lucky for it. But I felt bad when I saw others are suffering.
Yeah, it's sad to see others suffering from them.
Most time it is the handiwork of the citizens, they dump refuse everywhere and block the drainage system, some even build houses on the path that is meant for drainage and when it happens, they put the blame on the government.
Like! It's really annoying. Government isn't the only problem we have as a country.
Congratulations, your post has been selected for scifi quiz.
It's an honour, thanks!
most of the flooding cases in our country us primarily caused by us, if only we can step up and take care of our environment
Sadly, so many don't want to.
