My Experiences With Diverse Network Providers

Welcome to this week's prompt This week is about the network provider we use. I think it's an interesting topic to write on.

Well, first thing I want to say is that network connection in my country is very unstable. One minute your network bars are full, the next minute it's empty. Still, some network providers are better than others.

The first network provider I used, I think was Globacom. Their network was stable and I loved the cheap data plans they offered. I used the Glo network to make calls, connect to the internet and send messages. But it came to a point the Globacom network started failing me. It became unstable to the point you could stay a whole day and there won't be connection enough for even a call.

I tried using Airtel. I used the Sim along with an Airtel router and it served me well, though sometimes it was very slow. Those days I used the Airtel network to surf the web, get information online and publish to Steemit.

All this while I had been avoiding MTN because of their pricey data plans. But after using Globacom and Airtel I decided I had to switch to MTN despite their costly data plans.

I have used MTN for some years now and it's proving itself better than both Globacom and Airtel.

Why I Chose MTN Over The Other Network Providers

As I mentioned before, MTN's data plans were very pricey when I started using it. But I had to use it because of it's reliable connectivity. Globacom used to be the most stable network provider in my area but I don't know what's going on with them presently. So I chose MTN because I had no other option.

MTN's Network Performance In My Area

Well, it's comparatively good. One of the problems I had when I switched to MTN was it showed no connectivity in some of my smartphones. Moreover, the connectivity disappears whenever there's a rainstorm.

I found out that if I trekked from my house to streets up ahead, the signal will become stronger. Because of that, if I had an important online task to handle I would trek out of the house so I wouldn't have network unstability. I would go to the grounds of a government primary school in my area for that purpose.

I also experience something weird with MTN. Whenever I enter the restroom with my smartphone the signal vanishes.

My Disappointing Experience With Globacom

There was a time I loaded up several Gigabytes of data on my Globacom line. When I attempted to browse with it it refused to connect. That day I missed all the important things I was supposed to do online, like publishing on hive, visiting my social media handles to get updates, and doing my airdrop bounty hunting. I thought the connection would be restored the next day. But alas it continued the entire week and I had run out of cash otherwise I would have bought data on my MTN. So I stayed a whole week without a data connection and missed a lot of important stuff I was supposed to attend to online. That was one of the reasons that made me drop Globacom for MTN. I can't remember a time when data connection was out on MTN for more than 2 days.

Hike In Data Prices

This happened early this year. It was worst with MTN. Imagine a data plan that used to sell for N4000 now going for double that amount. There was a time I checked my bank account records and I saw I had spent almost N50k on data within that period of time.

I was happy when MTN introduced the Smart Data Plans which are far more affordable. Still, I have to spend thousands of Naira to stay connected just in a week.

Conclusion

I once thought of going for Elon Musk's Starlink but I couldn't because the price was too high. But if I can raise the money I would go for it. It would be far more efficient than MTN and the rest despite it's high price. But for now, I'm still on MTN.

Elon Musk's Starlink network is actually very good, but the cost of its packages is very high, which none of us can afford because we do not have enough income to use it. Its packages are barely affordable from the general network, and a package of around $100 is far beyond our income, so I agree to live on these local networks.

Thank you for reading my article and for your thoughtful comment. I just hope one day I will be able to afford Starlink.
