Beyond Your Certificate : The Untold Truth About Life and Job Hunting in Nigeria.

Source

Over the years, while we were growing up, we were told that education is the key to success. This is true, no doubt. However, this ideology made many of us believe that having good grades and solid qualifications was all we needed to secure our dream job immediately after graduation. We assumed this would guarantee us a soft life—getting married at the age of 25, living in our own apartment, and driving our own car by 26. Ahaha! But, unfortunately, the other side of the story was not well explained to us.

While this might not be the case for every Nigerian, most of us have experienced this untold truth, which is perhaps why the popular slang “school na scam” emerged. But is school truly a scam? No, it isn’t. The problem lies in the untold part of the story that we were not prepared for.

After graduation and diving into the reality of job hunting, I was forced to rethink the belief that numerous achievements and a degree would automatically translate to a bed of roses. This assumption might have been true in the past when the country was less populated and competition was not as fierce. However, the current reality is what we now tag "survival of the fittest."

Many of us have realized that job hunting in Nigeria goes beyond having certificates. We have come to understand that we need the following:

1 . Extra Skills and Competence: Your qualifications might get you into the interview hall or even land you the job. However, extra skills and competence are what will make you stand out. These extra abilities can even earn you a job without applying.

2 . Networking: In Nigeria, who you know is just as important as what you know. Do everything possible to build meaningful networks.

3 . Positive Attitude and Adaptability: This is another great factor that will take you far

4 . God's Grace and Favour: This is the “Oga pata-pata of it all.” As a Nigerian, you need God's grace in all your endeavors because He has the power to make everything possible.

Another belief I held while growing up was that the more I advanced and achieved in life, the softer and less demanding life would become. However, I have come to realize that the higher you go, the more demanding life becomes. That’s the reality we must face, but with God at the center, we can navigate it.

In summary, in Nigeria, getting a job is not just about having a certificate. It’s about what you can bring to the table. Your skills, experience, attitude, and network play a significant role in your success. While qualifications are important, they are just the starting point. Prepare yourself, stay focused, and keep pushing forward. The right opportunity will come your way.

You have captured this well. I am in a victim of a failed system. My fear is that my children might also be a victim of this. May God help us all.

Hmmm it's pathetic sir.

I think to save our children from this sad experience, parents need to allow their wards to learn some skills as early as possible so that they don't rely heavily on the system. The system is not trusted

Life becomes more demanding when we keep going higher and that's when we ought to always be prepared for whatever happens.
This life ehn, if you want to make it, just add to your skills and don't just depend on your certificate from school. It's never enough. Above all, the grace of God can not be excluded.
