My latest Proposal started at the end of last week and is currently unfunded. Getting a proposal funded is not easy and that's a good thing. I fully appreciate that the bar should be somewhat high.
The way it works
For those of you who don't understand the proposal system here's a brief backgrounder. You can put in a proposal by paying a fee in HBD. The Fee is 10 HBD for a proposal that lasts 60 days or 10 HBD + 1 HBD per day longer than 60.
My current proposal #265 is for one year so submitting it cost me 315 HBD.
You set the start and end dates and the Daily Rate. You can ask for as little or as much as you want but you have to justify what you ask for.
In order to be funded you need to get more votes than Proposal 0. In practice this is a relatively high bar. The Hive Power of the voters dictates the position. So you need some large whales and also a lot of smaller votes.
Getting votes
I believe I have a reasonable reputation on Hive and I have a number of large account holders who like what I'm building and vote for me. Winning over other large stakeholders is a personal interaction and I don't need to know the specifics of how everybody decides what to vote or not vote for.
Automation
When I saw that I wasn't going to pass the bar, I took a step which I've taken before to good effect which is posting very targeted comments automatically and asking for votes.
There is no easy to use tool to do this which in many respects means only developers or people like myself who've learned a lot can do it. This is both good and bad.
I set my script up to comment only on posts made in the last 30 days by anyone who has ever supported any project of mine and users of the v4v.app itself.
I also give an upvote to every post I comment on (not a big one and this does whack my upvote power) but for sure it amounts to a few cents worth of HBD.
Results: the good
I've sent something like 500 automated comments so far and I've had exactly one complaint. I did have a slight bug which left a few double comments and that was pointed out to me but I hope I've squashed that bug (I think it related to posts which had been edited).
I've had a large number of votes in the last few days, somewhere over 100 which is around a 20% action rate. That's an incredibly high rate of success which I attribute to being a very targeted list. I'm trying very hard to not spam indiscriminately here.
When someone replies to my comments I always reply and upvote (I'm using @arcange 's seriously amazing Engage tool).
The Bad
As I said above, I've had one complaint! I replied to him.
I'd actually like to screenshot the complaint but I'm not sure I can even find it: it came from an account with a reputation of 25 and exactly 0 HP. I'm happy to hear and respond to proper criticism, but you have to have a little more skin in the Hive game than this.
... it was bugging me so I had to write some code to find it...
And just to answer his point about buying BTC: I have sold Hive to buy BTC to keep my node stoked but right now as the Hive price has declined vs BTC I haven't been converting and hold more than 5,000 Hive which I really should have converted to BTC. I'm holding on to it in the hope the rate gets a bit better.
The Ugly
If this seriously pisses you off I want to hear from you. I just can't argue with the results. I also fully acknowledge that I'm in a somewhat technically privileged position of being able to run a campaign like this and there are some other non-technical proposals that probably never get made because they can't deploy these skills.
That said I'm currently unfunded so who knows if I will get more funding. If I don't I'll have to adjust my work and the capabilities of my apps accordingly but I don't foresee stopping V4V.app in the short term, I do make a reasonable amount from posts and running my witness.

The automated comments though might seem like a spam but looking at the message attached and the consistency of work you showcase in the blockchain will not be an issue for people who understand your contribution in the blockchain.

Firstly, I'll like you to know that your efforts and contributions to Hive are valued. And that putting a lot of effort into understanding and navigating the proposal system on Hive is admirable.
I understand that deploying automation and specifically targeted comments, had a high success rate, and you were able to gain support for your proposals.
Sorry about the complaint from an account with minimal involvement on Hive.
What matters is that you're dedicated to your work and genuinely interested in making a positive impact on Hive.

I love your explanation of how Hive proposals work. It's an eyeopener for me. There's really a lot to be learnt I guess.
With regards to the complaint, the truth is everyone has a right to their emotions and how they express it. However, i think he's pissed that it seems you're robbing Peter (Hive) to pay Paul (Bitcoin). However, i think what you're doing isn't anything far from withdrawing Hive for fiat which I believe a lot of people do already, so it shouldn't be a problem.
But while the enraged user isn't much of a notable figure on Hive, I believe we should just give it to him as a pro-Hive person and as you've done respectfully respond. He doesn't have to accept your POV, but it would set the precedence.

I've come to learn that spending time replying or giving thought into such accounts is just pointless as it's obviously just someone hiding behind alts or oftentimes very new not knowing enough about anything. It's much better to listen and think about criticism from accounts with some history and stake that's for sure.
As for automation for proposal votes, it's a bit sad that it's necessary as many barely even bother to look at the proposal page more often so it works as a reminder. I just wish the tools to automate these were open to everyone to give everyone, whether coders or not, an equal footing in getting the results they'd hope for or realizing that even then it's not going to fly instead of blaming it on the lack of marketing/attention through automation.
Then again making such tills open to anyone could also result in some spammy abuse/phishing attempts/etc so guess the tool would need some kind of whitelist/manual overview.
I specifically replied on this because it is the only one! I really expected at least a few other complaints but the reality is people are generally very happy to have their attention drawn to this and an upvote means they get paid to see it!
We really have something special here on Hive.
most accounts don't check the proposal page, i know i don't until i see something about it in a blog or a video. adding that message into the v4v app was also a smart thing as i think everyone that uses the service should vote for the proposal (makes sense :) ).
i seen some double comments and realized what you are doing. don't mind it and it is cool that you did not get a lot of complaints.
the complaint about BTC is stupid for everyone that understands how the service works. and having an option to move into lightning and back is important.
edit: just realized that the Return Proposal went pretty high again, it was much lower for some time.
Yup, the HBD stabilizer took over for a while but the return prop is now back up as the bar.
I think why some people think the automated comment look spamming might be because of the same message it contains. Is it always sent to the same user repeatedly??

I really appreciate your struggle. I have been seeing for a long time that you have been working very hard for this sir and the way I see it is now coming with new features that people will like a lot.
I have had no problems with V4Vapp... apart from my own stupidity in signing up for Muun Wallet, that charges to move on and off BTC mainchain on every transaction, completely defeating the point of LN.
They seem to be marketing themselves as some type of Legit LN service when this is total hogwash. Anyway, since I've moved to wallet of Satoshi (WOS) I've had no problems.
The only suggestion I have is some type of automated way to scan (maybe using a QR code) the exact invoice amount of HBD/Hive you want to convert into sats on Lightning Network, that includes ur V4Vapp fees and WOS fees if they have any. That way I could simply use my phone to scan the amount to put into WOS (invoice) amount to send and hey presto it wouldn't mean having to guess the amount, or end up being reimbursed if I send over the Hive/HBD amount through V4Vapp.
