Greetings, happy October 2025, a very beautiful and special month for the energy it presents and the traditions that are typical of the season. I hope everyone has health, prosperity, and joy, especially in this beautiful Feathered Friends community. Today I bring you a tiny bird, which I've been seeing more frequently on my lot for a few months now. It's the Melanospiza bicolor omissa, whose common names in the area where I live are: Tingüingo, arrocerito, or tordillo, the most commonly used being arrocerito.

Saludos, feliz mes de octubre 2025, un mes bien bonito y especial por la energía que se presenta y por las tradiciones que son propias de la época. Espero que todos tengan salud, prosperidad y alegría, especialmente en esta hermosa comunidad Feathered Friends. Hoy les traigo un pajarito pequeñito, que desde hace unos meses, lo veo con más frecuencia en mi solar. Se trata de Melanospiza bicolor omissa, cuyos nombres comunes en la zona en que vivo son: Tingüingo, arrocerito o tordillo, siendo el más utilizado arrocerito.

I've seen this bird nesting in some of the holes in the perimeter walls of my lot, but it was always extremely shy. However, in the last few months, after a family of Lamp-eyed Paraulata (Turdus nudigenis) settled on my lot, I've been seeing this little bird more frequently, always near those paraulata. It seems to have been taught not to be afraid. It's a small bird that hops on the ground, camouflaging itself with its surroundings, as it's a dark brown color, making it difficult to distinguish.

He visto a esta ave anidar en algunos de los orificios de los muros perimetrales de mi solar, pero siempre fue extremadamente tímida; sin embargo, de unos meses para acá, luego de que una familia de paraulata ojos de candil (Turdus nudigenis) se estableciera en mi solar, veo con más frecuencia este pequeño pajarito, siempre cerca de esas paraulatas. Al parecer le han enseñado que no debe temer. Es un avecilla que da pequeños saltitos en el suelo, camuflándose con el entorno, ya que es de un color pardo oscuro, por lo que es difícil de distinguir.

I took these photos while I was standing under the guava tree. This little bird drank some water, then started hopping around a bit while watching me I think it was also looking for some fruit on the ground that it could eat. I thought it was really cute, because it's so small and cute.

Estas fotos las tomé mientras yo estaba debajo del árbol de guayaba. Este pajarito bebió algo de agua, y luego comenzó a dar pequeños saltos mientras me observaba. Creo que también estaba buscando en el suelo algo de fruta que pudiera servirle de comida. Me pareció realmente tierno, por lo pequeño y bonito que es.

According to my research, this bird is a subspecies of Melanospiza bicolor, which is distributed throughout the Caribbean islands and northern Venezuela and Colombia. I live in central Venezuela, in the central plains, and I have seen this bird in this area, although according to the literature, Melanospiza bicolor omissa is endemic to Margarita Island (in the north of my country) and the coastal area of Venezuela. Its maximum length can reach 11 centimeters, and it feeds on fruits and grains.

Según pude investigar, esta ave es una subespecie de Melanospiza bicolor, la cual se distribuye por las islas del Caribe y zona Norte de Venezuela y Colombia. Yo vivo en el centro de Venezuela, en los llanos centrales, y he visto este pajarillo en esta zona, aunque según la bibliografía Melanospiza bicolor omissa, es endémica de la Isla de Margarita (al Norte de mi país), y de la zona costera de Venezuela. Su longitud máxima puede alcanzar los 11 centímetros, y se alimentan de frutas y granos.
