🦉 The Siberian stonechat or Asian stonechat (Saxicola maurus)

  • Saxicola (lat ): saxum rock, stone, -cola inhabitant
  • maurus (lat.): Moorish, black

These birds can be found in open spaces such as fields, clearings, and meadows. In my case, these are meadows located outside the city near the river. Early May is the best time to see and photograph these birds, as there's no dense vegetation, tall grass, or leaves on the bushes yet. The birds are very visible, not because of the lack of vegetation, but because of their habit of perching high on a blade of grass or a flower and observing their territory.

While the male guards the territory from various dangers in the form of birds of prey, small predators such as weasels, and me, the female at this time collects building material from the territory for the nest, which is located on the ground in a hole or near hummocks.
