Frigate birds
I think these remarkable frigate birds are fascinating. They can fly without landing for months at a time. They can live to be over 25 years of age.
Frigatebirds soar at speeds up to 95 miles per hour over tropical and subtropical oceans throughout the America's. These photos were taken in Zihuatanejo, Mexico.
Named after fast warships, Frigates (Fregata minor) travel an average of 255 miles daily for days or months on end without landing.
They can glide more than 35 miles without flapping their wings
Frigate birds are able to sleep while flying using a technique called unihemispheric sleep,. One part of their brain is asleep while the other remains active, allowing them to maintain flight They can keep one eye open to watch where they are going and stay alert.
Males are black, with females and juveniles having a white breast.
If they get wet they are unable to fly and despite having webbed feet, cannot dive for fish.
They grab food from the surface of the water and are pirates of the sky, stealing food from other birds in midair.

That is a remarkably fast bird. Based on some of the post I read on X/Twitter I think some humans have adopted unihemispheric sleep patterns :)
I know some young mothers who really need this skill!
Wow, so many interesting info on those birds. Really, it's amazing the facts of how long they can fly nonstop.
It is a fascinating ird!

I have never heard about these types of birds before.
They are incredible birds!
There are animals that live longer, but 25 years for a bird is crazy, it must be beautiful to be able to fly all over the world.

It's too much, I think that if I could fly and spend so much time I would travel the world.
Wow!
You managed to capture some really good images of their flight!
Great!
Thank you. I'm glad you liked the photos!
Of course I liked them!
They transmit energy, and that's appreciated!
Have a lovely Sunday!
Learned a few new things about frigates, thanks! I saw them flying when I visited Mexico, think it was the only time.
Aren't they amazing? I enjoyed reading about them.

Greetings @melinda010100 there is a species of that bird in which the male shows a reddish or reddish chest, really beautiful...a big hug.
I have seen that in photos! It seems females find it attractive. Pretty incredible.
Greetings @melinda010100, beautiful, nature is truly beautiful. There are many species with this mechanism of seduction, a typical example being the peacock... A big hug, Happy Easter Sunday.
great shots!
Thanks!
The bird looks very beautiful and looks even more beautiful in flight. We don't see such birds here. So nice to see it.
It is beautiful and such an interesting bird!

Beautiful and skilled as a god. Sleeping while flying, truly a bird with sky-level multitasking. The shot is also right on target, when the wings are in the most beautiful pose.
Thanks! They are such interesting birds!

Absolutely incredible... The ability of frigate birds to sleep while flying is truly remarkable and highlights the amazing adaptations found in nature. The sleep technique is fascinating, and I wonder what other birds or animals utilize similar strategies.
I know a few people who wish they had that ability! They are amazing birds.

Hope you have a beautiful fall day!
Thank you!
The Frigatebird is an amazing bird from your description…am sure the war ships were named after them cos they have been there all along😂😂
Nice photos
I don't know what native people called them, but frigate is the name they go by today!
Hello, lady @melinda010100, good morning
What a beautiful bird! I love its flight.
Beautiful photographs.
Have a happy Easter.
This bird reminded me of a pterodactyl.
I witnessed frigate birds in Dry Tortugas. Beautiful birds almost seem prehistoric. Great pics 👍
Beautiful photos. I have never seen that bird before.
Frigate birds are really cool and they are nasty little thieves. They're fun to watch as they steal food from other birds! They are on several coins from the Caribbean as they are common birds down there and I've shared a couple in the past. Great post, they are interesting birds!
