What's a recipe that is tied to a powerful memory?
For me it's a memory taking me back to four decades - ripe palm fruit cake.
During my primary schooling, we often moved due to Dad's job and one such posting was in a rural area, where we ate lot of authentic food that barely sells anywhere. One such powerful memory from four decades back was ripe palm fruit cake that I ate few times in a friend's house. Back then they did not have oven, but prepared the cake in a traditional method.
Raw palm fruit is the natural medicine for summer but then it ripens after summer and recently I saw them being sold at a street vendor, which tempted me to try recipe and recollect some childhood memories.
Interestingly I did not notice two varieties available, the black one tastes better than the brown one, but first time I brought the brown one and was quite excited to taste the unique aroma of this wonder fruit after such a long time.
So the hardest part is extracting the juice from the pulp - after taking out the outer skin, need to separate out each unit and then put in water and squeeze continuously till you extract everything.
You really need a strengthy hand to do this but you will love the unique and niche strong aroma while doing so.
Then rest of the stuffs are easy - add sugar, coconut and rice flour to make it like a thick paste.
Then cook it for some time to make it like a cake batter, and put in the cake teen , after adding ghee or butter.
We had to experiment with the temperature, because we could not find any online reference of this recipe. After baking at low temperature for half an hour, we had to extend it for another fifteen minutes.
Finally when it was out, both the teens were finished very quickly within few hours - I can not resist eating sweet and tasting the aroma after four decades was a whole different experience - you can understand.
We felt incomplete so the very next day, I got another black palm and prepared another set of cakes, fulfilling a very long desire. Now a days many places sell traditional recipes but this is still not available anywhere in the market. And if you read the health benefits of ripe palm fruit, then you will know why old people had less diseases.

Wow this looks delicious, so simple yet so good and not popular... Here shops sells rarely only the green one
My child memories are on polenta instead, from grandmother
There are actually some foods I ate many years ago that till today I haven't forgotten early
This is a very interesting recipe and resembles the Turkish dessert Sütlaç. But only in appearance.
Another recipe I can never forget is biscuit cake. I have shared this several times on my profile.
Some recipes are evergreen.
That looks delectable. I'd love to try that one.
Amazing how the vendors, and even you, found a recipe from palm fruit. I havent tried palm cake but it looks delicious. I wish we can cook it here. Thank you for sharing about this food and Im glad you found it. Your details how to cook is another plus one for me.
At first the fruit looks like mangosteen to me. This recipe looks interesting.
Even the color looks pretty, look more appetizing. It's interesting that you can create cake using pal fruit. I want to try that too, we haven't really tried palm fruit 🤔
The good part about moving constantly is that it allows you to get to know the gastronomy in different areas of your country, both rural and urban. So, you shared with us that great recipe from a few years ago and what you learned to prepare to teach your children
It seems really very delicious, that's really very good to see such of your efforts because in today's time we all generally prefer to just find simple ways to eat such things and just go to a bakery normally, but you are sowing alot many efforts to make it more homemade and healthy and that's really very appreciated. That's good to see such things done by you! I'll too try to do it at home... Seems yummy... It was really lovely to go by your post..!!
Have a good day:)
I have no idea what this fruit tastes like, but it is interesting that one of the ingredients in the recipe is coconut. I am a big fan of it, and its sweet smell adds deliciousness and elegance to any dessert recipe.
Traditional recipes like this keep cultural memories alive. The process of extracting the juice by hand must add so much flavor and meaning to the final cake. This would taste too good
Even I haven't tried it before but seeing how you make it makes me crave😐. I just can't imagine how it taste.
It lovely to read about your memory of ripe palm fruit cake from childhood, evoking feelings tied to family and traditional cooking methods in rural settings.
I have never eaten ripe palm cake and very first time I could see it from your content. The recyci should be used in the Jaffna Peninsula, which is growing in the Jaffna Peninsula, which is growing in the Northern Province of the North Peninsula. In fact, we do not even see the sales in the areas where you live. But the capital sold them at a high price. A traditional desert can be used as a traditional desert. In fact, such traditional food can be seen in cultural festivals. As I heard, the raw palm can be used as a natural medicine. The pharmaceutical importance of the past was well aware of the medicinal importance of the palm pharmacological importance.
Yes, traditional cuisines have medicinal values, our ancestors knew how to use food as medicine and that is the reason, they were much healthier.
Mine would probably be my mom's sugar cookie recipe. I have made them once, but thankfully I can still get them each Christmas from her.
Mom's recipes are best.
The food we enjoy since we were children is the most precious memory we all have. I always remember when I went out with my parents to enjoy some cachapas de Maiz con queso.

There are many recipes that are good memories from my childhood, but remembering when my grandmother gave us corn buns with butter to eat are some of the most precious ones I have.
Actually we have best memorable foods that we got our childhood. Since that period some foods couldn't taste as long period. Palm cake recipe like that. Looking as very delicious one.
That cake looks delicious, and childhood memories are always so full of joy and nostalgia that it's nice when we can relive them in some way.
It’s great that food can carry us back in time and connect us to places and people we hold dear. Thanks for sharing this beautiful memory.
