How did you learn to drive a car ?

I have a very sweet memory of driving my own car on the very first time.

140656.jpg

Driving a car is a dream for many at young age, and I was no exception, some people manage to learn driving on their own fearlessly, but the fear of hitting someone forced me to go to a driving school, as their training vehicles have extra control on the other seat, with the trainer taking action, when we err. Usually they provide a fifteen day crash course, but I did not feel very confident so I paid them again and took the training second time in which I tried to fine tune my skill.

I always wondered how the driver can see the immediate front of the vehicle, what happens, if we miss noticing something in the front but after I learned myself, I realized that, it's like our brain processing the visuals from far, and knows what's in front by the time we reach that spot. Did you ever have this feelings ? I guess whoever tries to learn has this question first.

And the most difficult task in learning, is to drive backwards - that felt like a herculean task to me. So when I bought my car, before taking delivery, I asked the trainer to at least make me familiar to drive backwards to our parking spot.

And now comes the most fun part - I was a bit nervous inside, while taking the delivery of my car, so I took one of my friend with me. Still after sitting on the wheel, I felt so nervous that I called the lady and asked her - Can I really take this car to home ? And her answer was - "You certainly can, I know you.."

That confidence is the biggest factor in not only driving but also in life - once you start with that confidence, you clear most of the hurdles. But wait, we had a twist - an over-bridge came on our way and there were lot of vehicles, as a result of which, we got stuck at an inclined spot. Even after repeated attempts , I could not manage to control the break and release the clutch and take the car forward from that spot, as the car was going back as soon as I would release the clutch.

After trying for more than ten minutes, my friend advised to stop doing that, and instead went out to find a stone to keep before the wheel. But hey, where do you find a stone on the over-bridge ? Ok, fair, you wait here, I will walk till the end and come back with a stone....That's why it's told a friend in need is a friend indeed...He literally walked half a kilometer to the end of that bridge, and finally came back with a stone......and we were able to drive forward from that stop. This is such a sweet and fun memory of driving my car for the first time and our friendship - even though, we do not meet often, we seek each other's presence when needed, you have seen my friend earlier in this post.

And since that very first day, by God's grace, I have managed to drive my car comfortably, without any accident. The car has become an emotion, staying so long with us - at times our daughter says, the car is elder to her....It's not that we can't buy a new car, that emotion holds us back to go for a new one, because there is no absolute necessity as well. The photograph in this post is not my car though, during one of our visit, I liked this old ambassador car parked on road, so much that I could not resist taking a photo. You have certainly seen my car in my previous posts, but if not, then I would share another fun event with my car that happened recently....

Sometimes it's hard to let go of something that holds dear memories to us.

As anyone approaches adolescence, buying a car is a desire. Obtaining a driver's license is an essential part of it. It is natural for anyone to feel nervous during the initial period of driving training. 20 years ago, when I was training to obtain a driver's license, the number of times I heard scolding from the instructor is endless. But with systematic driving, I am now able to drive on any road. However, I must say that driving backwards is a bit of a challenge.

That time license was only a money affair, you just pay certain amount to a broker and you get the license, after providing the documents. So many would drive even without a license.

That was really amazing to go through your wonderful story. While if I talk about myself, I'm just far away from driving a vehicle because I just tried a two wheeler and guess what happened I just fell, my balance got all wrong and I just hit a car and even it was the night time while I was practicing. I just got so scared about the fact that if I was not able to drive at night while there was no body then how can I be able drive in the traffic and that made me distant from driving!!

I wouldn't say good memory, here to take license you need to pass a written test with 30 quiz, 3 wrong and you are out, so you go to drive school and learn everything on rules to drive and try to pass it then there's the practice test, school drive prepares you for this too, it has been kinda stressful

You ate right confidence is the key in driving and attention but both come from experience

How are you, dear friend @sanjeevm? Good morning.

While reading the post, I identified with many of the things you told us about that happened to you while learning to drive.

What a funny anecdote about what happened to you on the bridge, and what a great friend you had.

Confidence is very important when learning to drive.

Thank you so much for sharing this experience.

This car reminds me of old times. I have learned to drive a car using a Maruti van. Nice article

We had to take classes in high school during the summer that taught you how to drive. It was all through the school I think and our 7th grade math teacher was our driving instructor. I had never really driven a car before that.

How nice it is to have a school provide driving training classes, we don't have that kind of facility in any school.

They don't do it that way anymore. A local company still uses one of our classrooms for the classes, but all of the trainers are outside contractors and parents have to actually pay for the classes now.

I can't drive a car. My dad tried teaching me to drive also I went to driving school for a while. But I could not pass the driving theory test. And now I think that I should not drive even if I could do to health reasons.

I learned how to drive on my father's old Passat on a country road at my grandma. I started driving on public roads without even having a drivers license when I was 18... Got my drivers license when I was 21. I love driving.

I'm not going to say that it's my dream to drive one, but rather to own one, even if it's second or third hand. The important thing is that it can take me to and from work, as well as do the shopping for the house.

This was such a heartwarming read! I really enjoyed how you shared both the challenges and the sweet moments from your first driving experience... especially that bit about your friend walking to get a stone.

It’s amazing how confidence (and good friends!) make all the difference. Thanks for sharing such a relatable and memorable story!

That is one fine, classic beauty of a car! It reminds me of my fist car.. a 1974 VW bug.

ahhhhhhh yes. I remember trying to master the whole clutch/brake/gas thing.. I had an older friend who taught me the basics and then my dad taught me stuff.. like how to parallel park. I gave up driving now.. too stressful for me. 😉😎🤙

I’m yet to learn how to drive a car. I get so scared. I think I need to overcome the fear of being inside a car beside trailers at first before I learn how to drive😅

That fear is the first hurdle and by taking training from a driving school , you will overcome that. They put extra brake, clutch on the other seat, so that they can control when you err, so that fear will go away after you drive for some time.

In the beginning, when we didn't know how to drive, it was very difficult to drive a manual car, especially when it was very difficult to drive an automatic car. It's easy, so a few years ago I learned from my cousin and, thank God, I've never had an accident.

Yes, I have driven a cousin's car, but it must be a unique feeling to be able to have one of your own and drive it to take all the trips at the same time. Why not work to earn money as a taxi driver?

My friend taught me how to drive. However, I don't have a car. I still don't have the means to own one. It's quite expensive in our country.
