My Interaction With Wildlife - A Short Story With Pictures

When I stepped out on my deck to enjoy a little fresh air and sunshine a couple days ago I noticed one of the local deer across the street staring me down. While it is not unusual to have the deer in our compound of about 100 one acre lots be somewhat curious about us humans, this seemed to be a little different. As it kept watching me it began to move closer to the little fenced area I was sitting in. I quickly decided to go in and grab my camera and see if I could get a few shots of the unfolding event.

bdiy-5.JPGWhen I came back out I saw that my cat had decided to join the fun and that the deer had come right up to the fence.

bdiy-4.JPGI thought... okay maybe the deer was interested in my cat. I have seen her and deer go nose to nose before.

bdiy-6.JPGSuddenly off to my left I noticed some movement out of the corner of my eye. At first I thought it was a rabbit with the ears twitching...

Lo and behold I finally realized why the mamma deer had been so focused on what I and the cat were doing in our little fenced in enclosure. Her baby was bedded down right up against the outside of the fence.

bdiy-7.JPGHowever I didn't understand why she had been so focused on another area of the fence opposite of where her baby was. As I looked back to the right it all made sense. She had a second baby!

bdiy-9.JPGAfter some guttural sounds from the mother...

bdiy-10.JPG The baby on the left got up and ran to her mother at the corner of the fence.

After giving me one more good long look...

bdiy-14.JPGShe took her babies off to somewhere she probably hoped would be a little more peaceful. 🙂

I like to think of myself as a pretty observant person. However I sat there quite some time not realizing there were two baby deer within about 30 feet of me. I guess their camouflage works pretty well!

Nature is something incredible. Even for you, who are quite experienced, you can only notice the two cubs later. In fact, camouflage works very well hahaha...

I can imagine how much time it took for them to have this type of "camouflage" to escape predators.

Yeah, they have instincts to lay really still and not make a sound. A lot of predators will just walk on by them.

So if there are predators that pass by them, it means that they pass by your house too. 😕

They are pretty safe in here. Maybe a coyote might come in our compound but are few and far between.

Thank goodness this rarely happens, because I imagine the coyote could also attack you. But I hope this never happens on your property.

With two babies to take care of she must have been concerned, then realized you nor the cat where going to do them harm. What a wonderful experience.

Yep. I probably should have realized what was up. She was 300-400 feet away when she began staring at me and slowly moving my way. Usually if they are curious they will just look at you for a bit and move on.

Okey, I think the bear and your cat had some secret meeting hehe! I loved your photography and the way you described it.

Thank you! I'm glad you enjoyed the post especially my description. I was working to make the brief encounter as interesting as possible. :)

Here is my cat with a deer from about 6 years ago. She's been having these "secret" meetings for a while now. lol

At first when I read I was thinking momma wanted some help, so as I read more and saw both babies were healthy that was good news!

Great to see it unfurl in front of your camera📷

She probably was looking for a little me time while the babies slept. I feel kind of bad for coming outside. lol.

I wonder why she let them get close to your fence.

I'm not sure these deer recognize structures as harmful places since they live amongst us. I think it was just a quiet place with no one around until I came outside. I've seen bigger deer bed down within about 20 feet of my house. I'm no wildlife expert though so I could be completely wrong.

Ah they live amongst you, well that explains it then. Here they would smell humans and scarper!

Yeah, in the forests that surround our little compound you are lucky to even see a deer let alone get close to them.

I love seeing this kind of thing. It is a treasure. A once-in-a-lifetime experience of witnessing and encountering the deer.

It certainly is a treasure. We get a lot of deer wandering through but I think this is the first time I've seen that young of babies and been that close to them.

You are so lucky because, in my place, we only see deer when we go to the zoo.

Awww.. Such cuteness 😍

You had quite the experience with the deer and her babies 🦌

And such amazing pictures you captured of them running.

And I love how the mamma deer and your cat seems to love checking each other out.

What a blessing to have that kind of wildlife so close.

Thank you for sharing and have a wonderful evening. Cheers 🌸

Thank you! We are lucky to get to see them growing up around us but I think these are about the youngest fawns I've ever seen in person.
