Plumeria 101

It's Not What It Sounds Like ..

I'm not here to pour out any sort of age old Frangipani wisdom, toward your educationally ready ears.. Which I am sure are hungry to learn! Nope. Sorry to disappoint. This post is more about the two as separates, and you'll understand what I mean as you read on.

IMG_8751 - Copy.JPG

It is Sunday morning.. And the rain is heavily pounding the side of the house. Clickity clunk, spitery splat .. a light rumble of thunder and a slow turn to a steady symphony of taps along the window sills. I meander to the kitchen, away from my laptop and the hopes of creating a well written post. It's been some time since I have devoted myself towards such a task, but it will again have to wait until a second cup of coffee is made and consumed.

As I wait for my modern day appliance to spit out another hot cup of golden goodness, a litter of yellow flowers at the other corner of the kitchen, catch my eye.

IMG_8752.JPG

This would be the third or fourth time I would gently collect them and toss them into the waste bin. Along with each fallen flower that has collected on the tile below, is a day gone by and one closer to the end of this beautiful moment ..

The approaching end of the flowers.

IMG_8754.JPG

The rain continues .. But steady's now into a more gentler lullaby. Sleep is over, the coffee is beginning to warm my soul from the inside out, and at least one daily chore is done for the day. I shuffle my feet back up the stairs, taking a seat back in front of the open and waiting lap top. My fingers find the keys as my thoughts attempt to form some sort of rational dialog for my small audience. It's been 17 day's since that has last happened.

Frangipani ..

Or otherwise called, Plumeria .. (As my wife would rather me refer to it as) It has been about 10 weeks or so since we first noticed the Plumeria flower bud beginning to form. It grew rapidly, developing into a beautiful bunch of deep yellow colored flowers. We have thoroughly enjoyed watching the transformation, from bud to bunch, take place.

As something ends, something else begins .. Or so they say. I feel let down knowing this display of beauty, along with their simple, sweet fragrance, is coming to an end. However, it is the beginning of this Plumeria's growing season. She is just getting started and has already surprised us with a new branch.

IMG_8756.JPG

This new division is already about 3cm long .. and growing at a rather rapid pace. We can't wait to get it outdoors again and to it's happy spot on the patio. It did so well out there last summer, so we are looking forward to moving it back once again when the time and temperatures are favorable for it.

The foliage is much larger this year .. Not sure if its from being outdoors last year or the fact that I have more consistently given it feedings of fertilizer. Either way it has grown substantially and is now beginning to lean over toward the window.

IMG_8760.JPG

I may need to purchase another stake or two to give it more support.

IMG_8759.JPG

I still see a few additional flower buds that have not opened yet. We may have another week or two of blooms to come, but they are slowly diminishing.

IMG_8758.JPG

We will enjoy them for as long as our little, but growing, Plumeria decides to display them to us.

101 ..

Happy Birthday to my Grandmother who turned 101 years young this last Wednesday!!! I am so happy that she has had such a long and wonderful life. She is still living on her own, with some help, and has a sharper mind than my own. Over the last 101 years she has kept her unwavering faith, her ever present grace, a strong moral compass that never points her in the wrong direction, a great sense of humor, and a last but not least.. a fire and desire to see Penn State football win another national team championship.

When you are old and grey and full of sleep,
And nodding by the fire, take down this book,
And slowly read, and dream of the soft look
Your eyes had once, and of their shadows deep;

How many loved your moments of glad grace,
And loved your beauty with love false or true,
But one man loved the pilgrim soul in you,
And loved the sorrows of your changing face;

And bending down beside the glowing bars,
Murmur, a little sadly, how Love fled
And paced upon the mountains overhead
And hid his face amid a crowd of stars.”

Happy birthday to your grandma. Belated wishes for a healthy and happy life.
What does this frangipani smell like? I have one that smells like a rose, another like a fresh spring day.

Thank you! I would say it smells like honeysuckle or peach. I don't know if you have peach schnapps where you live, but it's a type of liquor here. It smells like that. Otherwise it’s very peachy. 🥰 love it!

I don't know about peach schnapps, I don't drink any kind of liquor but I do love both the smell of honeysuckle and peaches. Now, I would be looking out for a similar one, I have no more space for trees now I may have to graft it into my existing trees though.
Have a great day, thanks for responding, I was curious to know how it smells.

Wow! Happy Birthday to her! What a great age. I can't imagine everything she has seen in her life! The flowers are beautiful! We've been getting our share of rain as well.

Oh my gosh… We got a boatload of rain last night. All the small streams are flooded and all the storm runoff basins are full. We needed the rain, but just not all at one time.

Yeah, good old grandmom. She's been around a while and seeing a lot of things. She has so many stories and remembers them all fairly clearly. She never misses Penn State football game either. She loves her Penn State. She grew up in that area so it makes sense.

That is pretty cool about Penn State. My Grandma was a big Pistons fan, but not that Grant Hill, she couldn't stand him :) That sucks about the rain. I know what that is like. We have been pretty lucky so far this year, but Spring is far from over yet!

Yeah it's been very wet here. I was able to finally cut the lawn between showers today. Things dried out a bit today. More showers tonight and tomorrow night.

At least you got it done! This time of year that should give you a couple of days before you have to do it again! 😛

Cheers! Yes, we are thoroughly enjoying that frangipani. Sad to see it beginning to fade, but I know it's going to love it's time outdoors here in another month. By that point, I think the weather will be nice and warm and it will look great outside.

Happy Birthday to your Grandmother! Wow! Still living on her own, she's quite the wonder. I wish the same for you and yours.

I cannot believe how long that plumeria has been in bloom! Holy cow, I want one. Also, my experience with fertilizer has been that the leaves get bigger, not always more numerous. The B&W shot is lovely.

Pepper! How's Molly doing?

Love that poem!

Awwww thank you. I'm not sure I want to live that long but if the world changes maybe I'll stick around a bit longer than I think I will. Lol. Like I have a choice. This is only the second time it has bloomed since we've had it, but it really seems to be lasting a lot longer. Maybe because I am watering it a bit more. We'll see how it does outside this year. It really did enjoy its time outdoors last summer. It looked like a mini palm tree actually. Lol.
I'm still heartbroken over pepper if you can believe that. I cried a little bit the other day when I was thinking about him and not sure if I'll ever get over losing him.
Molly has been doing well surprisingly. She had her ups and downs for a while, but seems to be on a rather long up streak. I hate to jinx it. It's still tough getting her to eat, but she's been doing better with that as well. Thanks for asking! I'll let her know you were asking about her. 😁😁😁

Aw...

I understand still being sad about Pepper. I can get weepy when I think of a very special dog I lost more than ten years ago! She was a rescue from puerto rico, flown to NYC because my brother had fallen for her and couldn't bring in a stray dog, which PR has a great many of.

Yes. I've heard about the many stray dogs there. Nice of you to be able to take one in. And I remember you telling me about this loss earlier. My heart aches for you as well ☹️

Thank you! Molly is approaching 15. She'll be 15 in a couple more months. I believe that is around 76 in dog years. 😁

How beautiful that yellow flower and how nice to know its name, I would like to tell you how it is called in our country but my sister does not answer the phone.

She also likes it very much and at this moment she has some branches in water to transplant them in the house.

The ones we have are white and the branches that sprout are beautiful.

Now that I see this small plant to have inside the house, you have given me some ideas.
Here they plant them in the yard or on the fences and they grow a lot.

happy birthday to your grandmother.

Thank you for the birthday wishes for my grandma 😁
