My 1928 Silver Peace Dollar

More Silver .. Another Peace Dollar!

A few years back .. I stumbled upon a treasure that I couldn't resist adding to my stack .. A 1928 silver Peace dollar. Now, I'm no seasoned coin collector, but something about this particular piece caught my eye and captured my imagination.

IMG_2031.jpeg

First off, let me tell you a bit about the coin itself. The 1928 Peace dollar is no ordinary coin. It holds the title for the lowest mintage [360,649] in the entire series among regular-issue dates. That alone makes it a coin worth collecting. This coin was produced at the Philadelphia Mint, and I have read in several places that they were struck with a softer touch, and many coins sport a unappealing gold tone. I've looked at the one I have and have compared it to the others in my collection, and don't see the "Gold Tone". Not sure I would even find it unappealing either.

IMG_2028.jpeg

What really sealed the deal for me .. Was learning that the 1928 Peace dollar is a key date coin. This means that it's highly sought after by collectors, especially when it's in good condition. And lucky for me, the one I found was in awesome shape for a circulated coin. It's fascinating to think about the history this coin has seen, passing through who knows how many hands before finding its way into mine. I keep the coin in a nice sealed capsule for safe keeping.

IMG_2025.jpeg

Now, let's talk about the design. On the obverse side of the coin, you'll find the word "Liberty" alongside the year "1928," a testament to the values of freedom and independence. The bust of a serene-looking Lady Liberty graces the center, adorned with a pointed crown and flowing hair. Flipping the coin over, the reverse side features an eagle perched atop a rock, surrounded by rays symbolizing peace. The words "United States of America," "E Pluribus Unum," and "One Dollar" complete the design, emphasizing unity and prosperity.

What's truly fascinating about this coin is its journey through time and the stories it carries with it. Each scratch and imperfection tells a tale of its travels, adding to its allure and mystique. But perhaps the most intriguing aspect of the 1928 Peace dollar is its rarity above MS65 grade. While coins in grades ranging from MS-60 to MS-63 are relatively available, finding one in MS-64 or MS-65 can be a bit more challenging. And if you're really lucky, you might stumble upon a rare MS-66 piece .. Let me know if you do. I would love to see it first hand. lol.

IMG_2029.jpeg

Despite its scarcity ..

This coin (Like ALL Peace Dollars) is more than just a collector's item .. It's a piece of history, a tangible reminder of a bygone era. And for me, it's a reminder of that serendipitous day when I stumbled upon a little piece of treasure and couldn't resist making it mine.

So if you ever come across a 1928 silver Peace dollar, take a moment to appreciate its beauty and significance. Who knows, it might just become a cherished addition to your own collection, just like it did for me.

Nothing like a little pre-game tequila. We will be getting together with family this year for pizza and wings. Nothing fancy. No parties this year. Probably not a bad idea. lol. How about you? Any big plans for the Super Bowl?

Not the most perfect peace dollar out there but not too bad of shape. I can't afford the really nice ones that's for sure. I actually like a little character on the coin anyhow.

I like the character of worn coins, just imagining who might have held that very coin in their hands. I love the perfect ones too, but often they are just way too expensive these days!

You got that right. Way too expensive I like collecting but stacking is where most of my available resources go.

Hahaha.. I would fear cleaning them. Actually, I would not even know how to start cleaning them. From what I understand you shouldn't mess with them so I don't. They are dirty as hell. I'll give you that. 🤣

You can put a tiny bit of Dawn blue dish soap on your finger tips, wet it and get a little lather going. Then use a micro fiber towel to dry it well but not aggressively. It’s total fine by ANA standards.

I'm sure that I have seven Peace Dollars but I don't recall any of them as 1928. I'll have to unbury them. !LOL

It is interesting to collect coins. Coins are not only the measures of value but they hold stories. Transcendental moments of a country, like those you treasure. Have a great week. 🥰

Awesome!!! There's just something about the design that really speaks to me. If you ever have the chance to pick up a high relief version like the 1921, those are really cool to look at. The design really pops off the coin.

Apparently those are extra expensive I got me the 1922 and I'm happy at least one for the collection but if the price is right I'll buy more !BBH

Yes, they come with a premium, because there are a limited amount of them. Nice thing about the 1922s is that they made quite a few so chances are you can pick up a really nice piece for a decent price. I have a couple of 1922s as well.

As someone who likes to take photos: How cool is that background!?😍

Haha. I tried to make it cool. Didn’t really think anyone would give it much notice so I appreciate you saying something. It’s an old copy of the declaration of independence that I had picked up a long time ago. It’s a reproduction, but also very brittle. Not sure how old it is. I never gave it much thought but it made a cool backdrop.

Ich finds einfach mega cool! Die beiden Sachen zu kombinieren ist auf jeden Fall eine sehr gute Idee gewesen, gibt dem ganzen einen tollen flair.

Lovely coin to find and keep, so many memories within minting coins design, timing this was a good read about the coin.

Fine detailed writing with nib in those days another classic in handwriting styles.

The older the things are the more special they are because it is not easy to maintain such things.I like all these coins and their designs very much.
