Estate Auction Silver - Part 1

What Did I Win At Auction? ..

Silver! .. and More Silver .. I decided to break this up into two parts. For this first part I was excited to show you my favorite pieces. I like to bid on estate auction things, but rarely win. This time I did and I think I made out well. It was sort of a blind auction, meaning they didn't tell you anything about the pieces so this was a bit of a risk. $50.00 later the auction was mine!

After taking possession .. Of the box, I began to dig through the pieces I had won. With every new piece examined, I became more and more thrilled with my choice to bid. All of the pieces were silver; Most 925 (Sterling Silver) and some others possibly 800 Silver (80% silver). All in all total Silver weight came out to be 286 grams of the shinny stuff. Not bad for $50 USD.

I am thinking that a few of the pieces may be worth more if I resell them rather than their weight of actual silver content (Melt value). So far, I am not sure I want to part with all of the pieces yet. Some may go into my collections.

Let's Dive In Shall We ..

The Butterflies ..

How STINKIN cute are these??? .. These and the following item (the flower) are my favorites of the bunch. They are all 800 silver (I think) and not in bad shape at all for being vintage broaches. I am in love with all of the filigree detail work. I would love to display these somehow in our home, but not sure yet on how.

IMG_2565.jpeg

The largest one is quite big at 3.5 inches wide and 2.5 inches long. I placed a 1934 Silver Peace Dollar next to them to give you some perspective on size. The coin and the butterflies all have some really nice toning, although I am curious to what these cuties would look like all cleaned up and shining.

IMG_2561.jpeg

Here are the stamps on the back .. One says silver, another says Mexico and the other something then I think 800 and then Mexico. ???

IMG_2576.jpeg

IMG_2578.jpeg

Now On To My 2nd Favorite ..

The Flower!

This piece is also quite large .. At 2.5 inches wide and 4.5 inches long. The piece is also quite heavy for a broach, and I couldn't imagine anyone wearing it for any length of time. The filigree detailed work is also very stunning with this one.

IMG_2562.jpeg

Everything about this piece I love, even the toning of the silver. The pin portion of it is a little beat up, but still intact.

IMG_2563.jpeg

The stamp on the back I can't fully make out.. I see it says "MEXICO" and then something above that resembles the work SILVER but not sure about that. Maybe someone here can help me out.

IMG_2571.jpeg

The bad part .. It's got a broken off petal. uggggg. I am hoping my friend who works with silver can maybe weld it back on for me. I hope so.

IMG_2564.jpeg

Next Up Is Another Flower ..

This fancy filigree broach .. Is also a flower, but it cam with no stem, leaves or distinct petals. If you look at the center you can see the stamen and anthers, so I know it's a flower. Either way I still like the fancy design work, it's just not as cool to me as the other pieces above.

Again, this piece is unmarked but did test out to be silver. Not sure but I am guessing 800 again here.

IMG_2566.jpeg

IMG_2567.jpeg

And I Don't Know What ..

I have no clue what this fancy thing is .. But it is marked sterling. I am thinking it may have been part of a buckle at one time or another before it became more scrap than anything. I like the design, but really have no use for it. It will probably go into my scrap silver bag.

IMG_2568.jpeg

IMG_2569.jpeg

IMG_2570.jpeg

So What Do You Think ???

You can see that I also got a few chains and bracelets and other goodies, but I'll get to those in another post soon. Maybe someone can help me out with those stamped letters. Those butterflies and flower are pretty cool, right?

That is really awesome, so are those online auctions or do you have to go there and do it in person? I hope you can find out more info about them.

No, just one line. Most auction houses have online auctions anymore. I think they found out that it's just easier after Covid. It will probably take some time to figure out more about the pieces, but I guess that's the fun in it!

That is super cool. I should pay more attention to things like that when I have some free money. $50 feels like a steal.

I definitely think it was a steal. I never win any of those things, so this is a treat for me.

I was going back between the butterflies and the flower as being my favorite piece. The more I look at that flower the more I really do like it better than the butterflies. If I put them all together in some sort of display I think altogether they would be my favorites. Lol.

Thanks. So far I feel as though I made out OK in the sale. The second part of this post will most likely determine whether or not I made out OK wink wink.

Me too! Regardless of whether it's 999 or 925 or 800 or whatever as long as you grab something for the stack as all that matters.

My sediments exactly. I really like them and the more I research the more I realize that I'm not going to be able to figure out exactly what I have but they've made many unique pieces in Mexico. Most of which go for between 25 and $40 piece. Right there I've made my money back!

Those are really nice pieces! My favorite was the midsized butterfly. I bet they'd be gorgeous shined up!

Out of all the butterflies I think the midsize one is the most beautiful. The large one is nice because it's big but the midsize one is definitely or appealing.

What beautiful silver pieces, especially the butterflies, they have excellent carving. I really like silver. Thank you, nice day.🤗

They are very beautiful, aren't they heavy, especially the flower-shaped garland, isn't it heavy for the head?

It's pretty heavy. I wouldn't decide to pin that to any clothing I own and wear it as a brooch as intended. But hey I guess clothing was thicker back in the day rather than today. Lol

Someone who loves silver the same way he wants all such things to be included in his holdings, these are very beautiful designs and the butterfly is my favorite.

Yes the butterflies are my favorite too. That may be a lie since I go back-and-forth between the flower and the butterflies but something about butterflies is appealing, isn't it?

I think you scored a nice haul. Some of those pieces could flip easily at fifty bucks a pop. Find the right customer for that turquoise number and probably more than that. Congratulations! I hope I find something that nice soon!

It's always far and few that I ever get so lucky to score a nice find so cheep. Guess my number was pulled. lol. Yeah that Taxaco Silver Malachite pice may get me $75USD+ alone. We'll see!

I'm hoping the Peace Dollar has an "S" Mint Mark... It would be a Big Mistake to Clean the Coin...

Nope not cleaning it. I just used it to give some size scale to the other pieces. It is actually a 1934-D. I don't have an S yet.. still on the lookout for one.

That must have felt like opening a treasure box, it's stunning pieces! I just love vintage jewelry, think I was born in the wrong era!
I usually clean my silver, brass and copper in a mixure of 1 tablespoon Tartaric Acid, 1 teaspoon Baking Soda and 2 litres of very hot water. The tarnish just drops off, one then rinse it in plain water and brush with a soft cloth. It is harsh on the hands, best to wear gloves, but I always forget;)
Thank you for sharing your stash with us!
