Feel Contentment... But, don't be naively contented.

pexels-sam-lion-6002000.jpg

I think there is a rough experience for certain people that remain overly contented with what they have. And, this isn't to make bones about the importance of being content with who we are and what we have. But, I'd hope people wouldn't allow themselves to just accept their situations the way it is.

As far as I can tell, I certainly see the issue with the whole narrative of 'being contented with who you are and what you have'. I know the bigger picture behind it, but don't you think this can also be a dangerous thing to say to someone naive and unwilling to take responsibility?

I've been in discussion with a couple of people who do not do what you would consider 'fairly enough' to help elevate themselves. They don't do anything to fix any bad habits they have. They don't do anything to improve their health and they don't do anything to improve their finances. Yet, they see people who are living a better life and they get jealous of that life.

However, they always stick the whole "be contented" notion on their face and they allow that to force them back to living a substandard life.

Do y'all see where I'm going with this discussion?

Trust me when I say this... I genuinely believe in being content but I can't bear to see people who use that statement as a justification for their laziness. And, there are a whole lot of people who don't make an effort to improve their life. If you are around such people, watching them go deeper into that delusion of contentment can be sad. It gets to a point when you will know that they have pushed the narrative a little too far.

I guess that's exactly why I'm using this post to share my thoughts on the topic of feeling contentment. Of course, I would also like to hear your thoughts.

Let's put this whole thing into perspective;

I'm a young lad from a humble home where we need to save up for months to pay our yearly rent. Money has never been a thing of luxury for me and I grew up watching my Parents work as they break a sweat to feed us and give us quality education. Ever since I became old enough to make my own decisions, I've always had this wishful thinking of having a better life and earning a lot of money.

pexels-oleksandr-pidvalnyi-1060492.jpg

I can't sit around and wait for miracles. Since I have a very expensive dream, I always remind myself that I have to do a lot to hit goals. It can be a tough journey especially when you are doing your work in a third-world country. The returns you get are never at par with the effort you make. To make ends meet, I always try to explore more money-making opportunities and I don't have any problem working late hours. I also do my best to improve my skill set.

That's the story of every young lad who wants to improve their standard of living. I'd understand that lifestyle and I can see why it will be very difficult for someone like myself to be 100% contented with whatever I have at the moment. Not when I know that things can be better if I continue to put myself in line for more opportunities.

Perhaps, the feeling of contentment has different meanings to different folks. Let's look at two varying feelings of contentment;

  • For some people, the feeling of contentment means they love the way things are for them and they wouldn't change anything.

  • For others, it means that they are grateful for what they have at the moment. However, they will always want a better life and they are ready to work for that.

When you look in the mirror and say "Be contented with what you have and who you are", which of the two feelings of contentment are you referring to?

Make no mistake about this... I know there are people who already 'have it all' and they feel they don't have to work for anything again. If you are in that category, good for you. But, not everyone has that privilege.

So, for someone like myself, I cannot wake up any day in this current situation of mine and say that I'm 100% contented with the life I'm living. I want each new month to be better than the previous one and I'm grateful for every little improvement I experience. Let's say; I'm contented to a certain degree, but I have a lot more that I still wish to aim for in life.

It's your turn... What's your take on the feeling of contentment?

I feel you’ve said it all. We’ve got to look at contentment in the ways you’ve explained. Be content but not to the extent that things aren’t going well and just because we’re supposed to be content, you’re seated doing nothing

You are on point. Being content with what we have and who we are is a good idea, but we have to always be ready to elevate ourselves and move to higher grounds. Hehe.

Thanks for sharing your thoughts on this. !PIZZA

I suppose a lot of people desire to change their standard of living. I, for one, want it— just for my family, not for me. I am happy with what I have, though, but I yearn for more because of my family, not myself.

It's a blessing to already have all you need. I think most people do what they do to give their family a better life. For me, family is a top priority for me. However, I also need to improve myself.

If I ever get to a level where I'm 100 okay with what I have, I'm very sure that will also be the same for my family. Haha. In a way, they are all interconnected.

Contentment is being okay with where you are at, at the moment. Applauding those who are better than you and strive to be better as well, physically, financially, mentally and spiritually. It's okay to want more for yourself without being envious or jealous of others.

Exactly. Thanks so much for sharing your thoughts on this talking point.

We don't have to envy those who are in better position than us. We also don't have to completely remain in our position forever.

Saying that we are contented without making any effort to grow all areas of our life will subsequently transcend to a life of stagnancy.

Oh yes, I have witnessed individuals with similar, sometimes unremarkable, traits. Depending on how you look at it, contentment can be either overvalued or underrated. I am happy with where I am right now, but it wouldn't hurt to strive a little more for personal growth. 🙂

Nice. Thanks so much for sharing your thoughts on this. Truly, contentment gets overvalued by some people and underrated by some others.

For me, I'm glad about the progress I've made in life and I'm still working hard to be better than I already am.

Hello @kenechukwu97 🙋

We understand your point, and we think your line of argument is great. In no way is laziness justified, which prevents us from looking for solutions to problems. Without a doubt, apathy and disinterest will not help to improve things. Those who resort to it and falsely call it "contentment" could be in trouble. 👀

We want to feel the satisfaction of the healthy and wholesome degree. Your post has reminded us of that. Thanks for choosing our community for your good content.🙏

Hugs ✨
