Hola, mis amigos virtuales, es un placer saludarlos. Hoy les traigo un tema interesante que debatí con mi novio hace unos días.

Cuando escuché por primera vez, hace años, el término tribu para referirse a personas que viven en ciudades, me pareció bastante raro, pero luego, al buscar su significado real en el diccionario, supe que: "Una Tribu no es más que un grupo social cohesionado, generalmente con parentesco real o percibido. Comparte una cultura, lengua, territorio y antepasados comunes o no. Su organización es tradicional, basada en la cooperación y liderazgo informal. Representa una de las formas más antiguas de organización humana, con una identidad colectiva fuerte"

Hello, my virtual friends, it’s a pleasure to greet you. Today I bring you an interesting topic that I debated with my boyfriend a few days ago.

When I first heard, years ago, the term tribe to refer to people who live in cities, it seemed quite strange to me, but then, upon looking up its real meaning in the dictionary, I learned that: “A Tribe is nothing more than a cohesive social group, generally with real or perceived kinship. It shares a culture, language, territory and common ancestors or not. Its organization is traditional, based on cooperation and informal leadership. It represents one of the oldest forms of human organization, with a strong collective identity”

Después de saber eso, entonces entendí y recordé que en Cuba si hay varias tribus urbanas y son un fenómeno juvenil mediante el cual cierto y determinado grupo de jóvenes expresan su búsqueda de identidad a través de gustos musicales, estéticos y comportamientos muy definidos.

Hay que aclarar que una tribu urbana no es una pandillas delictivas. Están los roqueros, los Mikis, los Reparteros (repas), los Emos y los Rastafaris. Sin embargo, la primera tribu a la que pertenecí fue a la de los amantes de Corea (aunque según he leído, no sé encuentra entre las oficialmente reconocidas), pero al ser un grupo tan numeroso, para mí si lo era. Durante la secundaria me sentía identificada con todo lo que tuviera que ver con ellos. Veia filmes y series coreanas, me vestía como ellos y solo escuchaba Kpop, iba a discoteca "Discorea" con mis amigas. Tenía mi cuarto lleno de afiches de mis actores y cantantes favoritos coreanos.

After knowing that, then I understood and remembered that in Cuba there are indeed several urban tribes and they are a youth phenomenon through which certain and determined groups of young people express their search for identity through very defined musical tastes, aesthetics, and behaviors.

It must be clarified that an urban tribe is not a criminal gang. There are the rockers, the Mikis, the Reparteros (repas), the Emos, and the Rastafaris. However, the first tribe I belonged to was the lovers of Korea (although according to what I’ve read, it’s not among the officially recognized ones), but being such a numerous group, for me it was. During secondary school I felt identified with everything that had to do with them. I watched Korean films and series, I dressed like them and only listened to Kpop, I went to the “Discorea” disco with my friends. I had my room full of posters of my favorite Korean actors and singers.

Una vez superada esta etapa, en el preuniversitario, fui sufriendo pequeñas metamorfosis y dejé mi pasión por Corea. Empezaron a gustarme otras cosas. Mis amigas y amigos tenían otras tendencias que fui conociendo poco a poco, así fue como supe de las características de estas tribus y que, por supuesto, cada una tenian bien definido sus lugares de encuentro.

Once this stage was overcome, in pre-university, I was undergoing small metamorphoses and left my passion for Korea. I started to like other things. My friends had other trends that I got to know little by little, that’s how I learned about the characteristics of these tribes and that, of course, each one had their meeting places well defined.

Por ejemplo, en La Habana, suelen reunirse en diferentes tramos de la inmensa Calle G, en el vedado, sitio en el que estuve alguna que otra vez con mis amigas.
Allí se pueden ver, principalmente los fines de semana, Rockeros, metaleros, punks y frikis, quienes son los amantes del Rock y su estilo de vestir va de lo oscuro a lo imponente, usan ropas negras, les gusta el cuero y los tatuajes, sus cabellos son largos, por lo general , son gente "calmadas" y centradas en ellos mismos. Luego están los Emos (Emotional Hardcore Music) que escuchan rock emocional. Su estética los hace lucir como personajes de película de ciencia ficción, pelo liso con un cerquillo largo que cubre parte del rostro (la gente le dice el bistec), delineador negro en los ojos, ropa negra, piercings. Son sentimentales, melancólicos y además, son muy unidos, consideran la amistad una "hermandad", se depilan todo el cuerpo y los varones pueden ser confundidos con hembras.

También están los Mikis (con estos me sentí muy identificada), escuchan música electroacústica, disco y trova cubana, son alegres, estudiosos y su filosofía es "pasarla bien" y tener muchos proyectos. Ahora viene una tribu que en Cuba es muy numerosa, creo que, según mi apreciación de lo que viví, es la mas grande: Los Repateros (repas). Con esta también me identifiqué en algunos aspectos. Los reparteros son fanáticos al Reggaetón, hip hop, rap, timba (una variante cubana de la salsa). Su estética llama la atención por ser amantes de las modas. Sus miembros, por lo general, son jóvenes de barrios humildes y marginales y en ocasiones se muestran violentos y conflictivos.

Por último están Los Rastafaris, seguidores de ritmos africanos y del regué ( Bob Marley). Por lo general son personas de raza negra aunque también hay de otras razas. Usan cabellos largos y tejidos que llaman Rastas (dreadlocks), sus colores son el rojo, amarillo y el verde, estética que sombiliza la raza negra, suelen ser gente pacífica.

There you can see, mainly on weekends, Rockers, metalheads, punks, and frikis, who are lovers of Rock and their dressing style goes from dark to imposing, they wear black clothes, they like leather and tattoos, their hair is long, generally, they are “calm” people and focused on themselves. Then there are the Emos (Emotional Hardcore Music) who listen to emotional rock. Their aesthetic makes them look like characters from science fiction movies, straight hair with a long fringe that covers part of the face (people call it the steak), black eyeliner on the eyes, black clothes, piercings. They are sentimental, melancholic and also, they are very united, they consider friendship a “brotherhood”, they depilate their whole body and the males can be confused with females.

There are also the Mikis (with these I felt very identified), they listen to electroacoustic music, disco, and Cuban trova, they are cheerful, studious and their philosophy is “have a good time” and have many projects. Now comes a tribe that in Cuba is very numerous, I think that, according to my appreciation of what I lived, it is the largest: The Reparteros (repas). With this one I also identified in some aspects. The reparteros are fans of Reggaeton, hip hop, rap, timba (a Cuban variant of salsa). Their aesthetic draws attention for being lovers of fashions. Their members, generally, are young people from humble and marginal neighborhoods and occasionally they show themselves violent and conflictive.

Finally there are The Rastafaris, followers of African rhythms and reggae (Bob Marley). Generally they are people of black race although there are also of other races. They wear long and woven hair that they call Rastas (dreadlocks), their colors are red, yellow and green, an aesthetic that symbolizes the black race, they are usually peaceful people.

De todas estas tribus he captado un poco. Hoy no pertenezco a ninguna y a la vez pertenezco a todas, soy un híbrido, una mutación. Me gustan muchas formas de vestir, de hablar y mi repertorio musical es muy amplio, soy una melómana. Escucho rock, electroacústica, baladas románticas, regué, salsa, timba y reguetón. Hay un tipo que reguetón que disfruto mucho, pero esos que tienen letras groseras y chabacanas para mi están vetados.

From all these tribes I have captured a little. Today I don’t belong to any and at the same time I belong to all, I am a hybrid, a mutation. I like many ways of dressing, of speaking and my musical repertoire is very wide, I am a music lover. I listen to rock, electroacoustic, romantic ballads, reggae, salsa, timba and reggaeton. There is a type of reggaeton that I enjoy a lot, but those that have gross and vulgar lyrics for me are vetoed.
