The language of ivrit ( עברית ) Genesis 41, Post #8
Welcome to my Hebrew reading & language series.
Genesis 41:53-57
We have finished another chapter. We see it written that many came from all around Egypt to buy grain.
The famine has begun and the people who paid a portion of their harvests are now paying for that same grain back. This is what governments do when they have too much. Having taken from the people, they now charge the people for assistance. Since the famine was world-wide (distances that would be able to be crossed), people also came from other lands.
From a thirty thousand foot view, the Creator found it necessary to put everyone through a tragic famine in order to get Joseph out of slavery and also to bring his brothers to bow down before him as was given to Joseph as a dream when he was young. All apparent evil has its purpose.
Today's reading
English
The seven years of plenty that occurred in the land of Egypt came to an end, and the seven years of famine began to come, as Joseph had said. There was famine in all lands, but in all the land of Egypt there was bread. When all the land of Egypt was famished, the people cried to Pharaoh for bread. Pharaoh said to all the Egyptians, "Go to Joseph. What he says to you, do."
So when the famine had spread over all the land, Joseph opened all the storehouses and sold to the Egyptians, for the famine was severe in the land of Egypt. Moreover, all the earth came to Egypt to Joseph to buy grain, because the famine was severe over all the earth
