An Unexpected Find at Geylang Bahru

avatar

A few days ago, I went to the Geylang Bahru Food Centre to enjoy a nice, healthy bowl of Yong Tau Foo. I’d had too many rich and heavy meals over the weekend, so I wanted to balance things out by eating something lighter and healthier. Unfortunately, I was disappointed to find that the stall was closed, which left me searching for other options. No matter how disappointing that can be, I usually just shift my focus and look for something else to try. I turn disappointment into motivation for change, and for me, that’s a great way to discover new cuisines. After all, there are plenty of options here at the food centre.

If you’ve ever been to a hawker centre, you’ll know that finding a stall that satisfies your cravings at that moment can actually be harder than you think. The reason is simple, there are just too many good dishes to choose from! It’s also easy to get confused or tempted when you see people queuing at certain stalls. Why is that? For me, it feels like a waste of time to queue for food, especially when I’m hungry. But at the same time, if more people are queuing, it must mean the food is good, and that thought can be hard to resist.

Sometimes I listen to my stomach’s complaints and go for stalls without queues. Other times, I give in to the FOMO and find myself curious about what’s making people line up. This time, it was a seafood stall.

The English translation of the stall’s name is Blue Sky Noodles & Fish Soup. I believe those are their specialties, but I didn’t order them. Since I wasn’t sure what to get, I simply followed what most people in line were ordering, the Salmon Fish Rice Set.

What caught my attention was the portion size of the fish, that’s when I knew I had to order it. Although the slices of salmon were quite thin, that didn’t discourage me. The set was reasonably priced at just SGD 7.50, which I found cheap considering it came with rice, vegetables, and a fried egg.

The rice and egg were cooked perfectly, and the seared salmon was excellent, still moist, flavorful, and well-seasoned. I especially enjoyed the dark soy sauce and the slice of lemon they provided. The sauce had a hint of sweetness, while the lemon added a tangy kick that balanced it perfectly. Overall, I really enjoyed this meal.

In the end, what started as a disappointing moment turned into a pleasant discovery. I realized that sometimes, the best food experiences come from unexpected choices. The Salmon Fish Rice Set from Blue Sky Noodles & Fish Soup truly exceeded my expectations and reminded me to stay open to trying new things. Every visit to a hawker centre feels like a small adventure, filled with surprises waiting at every corner. So next time a stall you love is closed, take it as a chance to explore — you might just find your next favorite meal.
