A poem in Tanka form called Spring

Introduction

We thought we would start writing and exploring poetry forms every week. Writing poetry and song lyrics and playing with words is always something we have liked doing so we thought why not do some more! So two of us are writing poems every week and we will see how it goes! We found the Tanks last week but had never heard of it so this week we though we would look at what it was!

This week we are looking at the Tanka

This is the definition:

Tanka

The tanka poem is another traditional Japanese poetic form, which is slightly longer than the haiku. The tanka has 31 syllables over 5 lines, with a 5 – 7 – 5 – 7 – 7 structure. Like the haiku, the first part of the poem is descriptive, while the second section (usually the last two lines) is a reflection or realisation about the earlier part.

Spring 1

A flower field
Bright colours and smells blooming
Sun is out, blue skies
Hope spreading through my old bones
This year could be the year

Spring 2

Birds chirping in trees
Waking up to the new dawn
Blind eyes opening
Gratitude and thankfulness
Is there time to make new life?
