Beereview – "Lagunitas" and "Blue Moon" [ENG/ESP]

Yeah, it's been a while since my last review – since my last post, actually – but here I am, trying again to make writing here a habit. Truth is, I've been feeling no motivation at all to write anything lately. It feels like there's no internal or external push to keep going, even though I still love doing it. But well, in the end, I'm still here, still trying. So, hm, let's put the ranting aside and focus on the beers.

Both beers I’m talking about today are always around here. Even though they’re both American, it’s pretty easy to find them in stores nowadays, and for a fair price.

Sí, ya pasó un buen tiempo desde mi última reseña – desde mi último post, en realidad – pero aquí estoy, de nuevo intentando hacer de esto un hábito. La verdad es que últimamente no he tenido nada de motivación para escribir. Parece como si no hubiera un empujoncito interno o externo para seguir escribiendo, aunque todavía me encanta hacerlo. Pero bueno, al final, aquí sigo, intentándolo. Así que, eh, dejemos las quejas de lado y vamos a lo importante: las cervezas.

Las dos cervezas de las que voy a hablar hoy son bastante comunes por aquí. Aunque ambas son estadounidenses, hoy en día es bastante fácil encontrarlas en las tiendas, y a buen precio.

So, let’s start with the Californian one. Lagunitas, named after the town where it was founded, started back in 1993 and later moved to another city called Petaluma. I find its name quite charming – "little lagoons" in Spanish, isn't it cute? Heh.

In 2015, the Heineken Group bought the brewery, and they started producing Lagunitas IPA here in Brazil, in Blumenau. That’s why it’s way easier to find now, like I mentioned before. I’m not sure if the recipe is exactly the same — probably yes, but the only way to know if it tastes different is to try a Lagunitas in its place of origin. Speaking of which, I paid around $10 BRL for the 355 ml bottle ($1.70 USD, approximately). It's also available in a 350 ml can.

Así que, vamos a empezar con la californiana. Lagunitas, llamada así por el pueblo donde fue fundada, comenzó en 1993 y después se mudó a otra ciudad llamada Petaluma. Su nombre me parece muy adorable, jeje.

En 2015, el Grupo Heineken compró la cervecería y empezaron a producir Lagunitas IPA aquí en Brasil, en Blumenau. Por eso ahora es mucho más fácil encontrarla, como mencioné antes. No sé si la receta es exactamente la misma – probablemente sí, pero la única manera de saber si el sabor cambia es probar una Lagunitas en su tierra de origen. A propósito, pagué unos $10 BRL por la botella de 355 ml ($1.70 USD, aproximadamente). También está disponible en lata de 350 ml.

Lagunitas IPA, their most famous beer, is a classic American IPA with 6.2% ABV and 51 IBU. When poured into the glass, it shows a clear amber color with some floating yeast, and a white, thick but irregular foam with medium persistence. It left some lacing sticking to the glass as I drank it. Its aroma is explosive and very inviting, mainly hoppy as expected. According to their official website, the recipe contains 43 different varieties of hops – not sure if that's true but it could explain the hoppy smell. It's quite citric, reminding me of passion fruit and pine, typical of a West Coast style.

At the first sip, it’s easy to notice the same notes I felt in the aroma – grapefruit and orange, with the pine flavor even stronger in the taste, seasoned with a herbal touch. There’s also a light caramel sweetness from the malts, almost imperceptible at first. The aftertaste is dry, astringent, and slightly resinous, but not too aggressive. It has a light to medium body and moderate carbonation, giving a refreshing mouthfeel without being too heavy in terms of bitterness.

I think this IPA is kind of similar to our Brazilian Eisenbahn American IPA, but the hops taste here is different, not as "grassy" as Eisenbahn – by the way, you can check my review of Eisenbahn American IPA here. I'll have to try both on the same day to be sure. Lagunitas IPA is that beer that has everything in the right place, exactly what you’d expect from an IPA of its style. Overall, it’s a very easy-to-drink IPA, even for those who aren’t used to strong bitterness. A classic of the style, it shows exactly why it became so popular.

Lagunitas IPA, su cerveza más famosa, es una clásica IPA americana con 6.2% ABV y 51 IBU. Al servirla en el vaso, muestra un color ámbar claro con un poco de levadura flotante, y una espuma blanca, espesa pero algo irregular, de persistencia media. Mientras la iba tomando, dejó marcas de espuma pegadas en el vaso. Su aroma es explosivo y muy atractivo, con mucho lúpulo, como era de esperarse. Según su sitio oficial, la receta lleva 43 variedades diferentes de lúpulo – no sé si es verdad pero eso explicaría el olor potente. Es bastante cítrica, me recordó al maracuyá y al pino, típico del estilo West Coast.

Al primer sorbo, es fácil notar las mismas notas que sentí en el aroma – pomelo y naranja, con el sabor a pino aún más fuerte en el paladar, acompañado de un toque herbal. También hay una ligera dulzura a caramelo de las maltas, casi imperceptible al principio. El retrogusto es seco, astringente y ligeramente resinoso, pero sin llegar a ser agresivo. Tiene un cuerpo entre ligero y medio y una carbonatación moderada, que le da una sensación refrescante sin ser demasiado pesada en amargor.

Creo que esta IPA se parece un poco a nuestra Eisenbahn American IPA brasileña, pero aquí el lúpulo se siente diferente, no tan "herboso" como Eisenbahn – por cierto, pueden checar mi reseña de Eisenbahn American IPA aquí. Tendré que probar las dos el mismo día para confirmarlo. Lagunitas IPA es esa cerveza que lo tiene todo en el lugar adecuado, exactamente lo que se espera de una IPA de su estilo. En general, es una IPA muy fácil de beber, incluso para aquellos que no están acostumbrados a un amargor fuerte. Un clásico del estilo, que demuestra exactamente por qué se hizo tan popular.

And here we have another classic beer: Blue Moon Belgian White. It was created in 1995 by Keith Villa, a brewmaster who studied brewing in Belgium and wanted to bring a Belgian-style beer to the American market. In the beginning, Blue Moon almost didn’t survive – the project was nearly discontinued a few times, but he didn’t give up. In 1997 he had the idea of serving it with an orange slice, inspired by the way some beers are served with lime in Mexico – and it worked pretty well.

Originally, it was brewed at Sandlot Brewery in Denver, Colorado, and was first called Bellyslide Belgian White. Later, it became part of Molson Coors Brewery and got the name we know today — they say it was inspired by someone saying, "a beer this good only comes around once in a blue moon" during a tasting session. For non-native English speakers like me, this expression means something rare or unusual – just like this beer was at the time.

Y aquí tenemos otra cerveza clásica: Blue Moon Belgian White. Fue creada en 1995 por Keith Villa, un maestro cervecero que estudió en Bélgica y quería llevar una cerveza de estilo belga al mercado estadounidense. Al principio, Blue Moon casi no sobrevivió – el proyecto estuvo a punto de cancelarse varias veces, pero él no se rindió. En 1997 tuvo la idea de servirla con una rodaja de naranja, inspirado en cómo en México suelen servir algunas cervezas con lima – y la cosa funcionó bastante bien.

Originalmente se elaboraba en la Sandlot Brewery, en Denver, Colorado, y su primer nombre fue Bellyslide Belgian White. Más tarde, pasó a formar parte de Molson Coors Brewery y adoptó el nombre que conocemos hoy – dicen que se inspiraron en alguien que, durante una degustación, dijo: "una cerveza tan buena como esta solo aparece una vez cada luna azul". Para los que no son nativos en inglés, como yo, esta expresión significa algo raro o poco común – justo como lo era esta cerveza en su época.

Just like Lagunitas, Blue Moon has also been produced here in Brazil for about two years now, also by Heineken Group. And of course, that made the prices drop and it's easier to find it in markets. I paid around $12 BRL for the 355 ml bottle ($2.11 USD, approximately). It has 5.4% ABV and 9 IBU.

It has an interesting orangey color compared to other witbiers, looking a bit more vibrant and cloudy. In the glass, it forms a dense, creamy white foam with good persistence. As for the aroma, it’s a mix of orange, cereal, and bread notes. In the mouth, just like its unique color, the citrus from the orange stands out — a good point for me — together with a sweetness from the malts. However, I didn’t find it very spicy, couldn’t really feel the coriander at all. And although I find it creamier than Hoegaarden, for example — impossible not to compare them, sorry — the aftertaste felt more watery than I expected, it lacks intensity in my opinion.

Al igual que Lagunitas, Blue Moon también se produce aquí en Brasil desde hace un par de años, también por el Grupo Heineken. Y claro, eso hizo que bajara el precio y ahora sea mucho más fácil encontrarla en los supermercados. Pagué unos $12 BRL por la botella de 355 ml ($2.11 USD, aproximadamente). Tiene 5.4% ABV y 9 IBU.

Tiene un color anaranjado interesante en comparación con otras witbiers, se ve un poco más vibrante y turbia. En el vaso forma una espuma blanca, densa y cremosa, con buena persistencia. En cuanto al aroma, se mezcla la naranja con notas de cereal y pan. En boca, al igual que su color distintivo, resalta ese toque cítrico de la naranja – para mí un punto a favor – junto con un dulzor de las maltas. Sin embargo, no la sentí muy especiada, casi no logré percibir el cilantro. Y aunque me parece más cremosa que, por ejemplo, la Hoegaarden — imposible no compararlas, sorry — el retrogusto me pareció más aguado de lo que esperaba, le falta intensidad en mi opinión.
