Crispy Homemade Banana Chips – A Step-by-Step Recipe

Hello everyone, today I am going to share my mother's banana chips recipe with you guys. Well, it is extremely comforting about making banana chips at home. And it tastes better if it's cooked by my mom. I love crunchy and spicy chips because as an Asian we love to include spices in our food. The banana chips are easy to make. If you are craving for a midnight snack or want to serve something good to your guests then banana chips will hit the spot. The benefit of cooking it at home is that you can add as many flavors as you want and there's no limitations. Also no health issues because the oil we are gonna use is fresh.

Here’s my mom's recipe for making perfectly crispy banana chips, let's begin!

🌿Ingredients:

½ tsp red chili powder (adjust to taste)

½ tsp turmeric powder (adjust to taste)

½ tsp salt (adjust to taste)

½ tbsp gram flour (besan)

Soybean oil for deep frying

2 raw bananas (it's green bananas, not ripe)

🥄 Step-by-Step Instructions:

1st) Make sure to pick the green raw bananas, because more greener is better. Also do not pick the ripe bananas for this recipe, because that would taste horrible. Because ripe bananas are very soft and sweet.

2nd) Peeling raw bananas is necessary and it's hard, we prefer to use Boti instead of knifes. Boti is a cutting tool and you might not find it in your area but it's available in places like Bangladesh. Using Boti because in this manner you can peel it perfectly. Don't forget to trim of both ends.

3rd) Now, cut the bananas into thin slices and it must be round. One important fact that you must acknowledge is that if you make the slices thinner then it will be more crispier.

So, we are not planning to make it that much of thin and a little bit is okay as you can see in the picture. If you want larger sized chips then you can slice them straight but I prefer the round ones.

This step is optional but if you want you can soak the slices in salted water for 10-15 minutes. It will prevent from sticking together. Also, make sure that these are dry before frying. I didn't want to waste any time so went for the next step.

4th) in this step we have to mix every ingredients properly.

First take gram flour

½ tbsp gram flour is enough

Add ½ tsp chili powder

Add ½ tsp turmeric powder

A bit of salt to taste

Now, mix it gently over the banana slices because we want the flavours to get inside of the slices so it can taste better. Using hand is better than using any other tools.

5th) Heat up the Oil, I am using soybean oil into a small frying pan. Because the quantity of bananas slices is not that much. Using a bit of oil also works make sure the slices can be dipped into the oil. Keep it on medium flame and when it's hot you can start to drop it.

6th) Carefully put them into the hot oil. Also, don't overcrowd the pan because they need freedom too lol. Keep frying them until they turn red and crispy.

It's gonna take 3-5 minutes per batch. Well, it also depends on the thickness of the slices.

You can spot the difference now because the colors are changing and it's ready to be served. Use a slotted spoon to transfer them to a plate.

🍽️ There you go crispy spicy banana chips! You can serve it with tea or use it as snacks. But you need to eat them as soon as you fry them because they get cold in just few minutes. Or if you like it cold then it doesn't matter. Maybe it can be stored for 1/2 days.

Every age group loves banana chips, and it's a popular snack in our family. My mom has been making me these chips since my childhood and she did it because I told her I was bored of eating the same potato fries and I wanted something different and that's when she decided to cook this banana chips for me.
