Feed the Fire, Don’t Burn Out

Let's talk about discipline for a minute.

How is discipline often seen? It's often seen as punishment, or even a burden to carry. Something that has to get done.

I want to invite you to approach it from a different perspective. Not as a cross to carry but as a concept that slowly brings you to the life you envision for yourself.

I read somewhere that success is the consistent practice of a few simple disciplines. That quote has stuck with me ever since. The daily practice of a few disciplines guides us in the right direction, and it's only a matter of time before we get to the destination.

It's not a surprise that we are innately averse to the concept of discipline. It mostly has to do with the way in which it was packaged and sold to us.

Whenever we hear the word discipline, it's often accompanied by hard work, diligence, stress, burnout, doing what you don't feel like doing, etc. I mean, it's no wonder that we don't want anything to do with it.

But when we truly break it down, discipline means showing up. It doesn't matter the capacity in which we do, we just have to show up. This is where consistency comes into play.

Let's take, for example, you have a goal to exercise daily. It's ridiculous to think that you can go from not exercising since you were born to doing high-intensity workouts every single day without burning out.

The first and most important step is to take account of where you currently are. Then make a series of plans you can stick to without thinking it's a hassle. Stick to it and slowly increase your intensity.

So instead of going from 0 to 100, try 0 to 2 to 10 to 15 to 0 to 25 and so on. That should make it easier for you to show up daily.

Think of it as slowly feeding your fire with more wood, gradually and consistently, as opposed to dumping everything at the start and pouring petrol over it. It will burn bright and large, but it'll eventually burn out.

Take this as a sign to slowly feed your fire and fan your flame. Inevitably, you will get to your destination - Success.
