What's a Hootenanny?

image.png

Every year for the last quarter century, me and the boys have entered this yearly hockey tournament of the arts. The arts part is the magic as it is filled with artists, musicians and performers rather then alpha-chad hosers and you have to put an act on stage for 30 minutes to prove it. This is called a Hootenanny and I will try to decipher beer-soaked memories to tell you the tale of this year's edition.

The Morningstars

These guys have been in since day 1, 25 years ago. Highlighted perhaps by Dave Bidini from the Rheostatics, they are packed with vets and rocked a set of The Who songs for the younguns.

Peterborough Pneumonia

These guys bring it every year and rocked the '25 edition with a battle of the different NHL Nintendo games for supremacy. You can see them battling it out in the mosh pit if you look closely.

The Myna Birds

One of the newer teams but still enough years to bring it, The Myna Birds planned a special set dedicated to The Cure.

IMG_5022.jpg

I am not a big Cure fan but damn they did a great job on songs like Boys Don't Cry, Friday I'm In Love and all the hits.

Twisted Sisters

IMG_5029.jpg

Every year, one of the teams go all in with the props, costumes and performance in an effort to take home the coveted Dominion Award for best Hootenanny performance. Look at this impressive Ghost tribute!

IMG_5027.JPG

What a haunting rock opera where you can see Patrick Swayze on the stained glass window in the back and the wild costumes. The druid circle to the right was a birthing ritual for some hoser with a wig as a sexy Swayze as the son of Lucifer. Weird wild stuff and just enough to take home the trophy. Well deserved.

Stay Tuned!

Next chapter of this tale, I will share some other awesome acts and a back stage view of our set. I may have spoiled the winner in this chapter but there are plenty of live music spectacles and coverage of our team's time on stage. Too much fun!

Here's to sports, beers, buds and live music!

It was blasphemously funny. So much so that the musical performance was not that great but it didn't even matter. Patrick Swayze as the sexy son of lucifer is nuts.

Haha. Bad news is all of these shows are this night only for this crowd. So you missed your chance but I can give you pics to make it feel like you were there!

Twisted Sisters must have won. These are some cool costumes, man.

Yah man that is some wild stuff huh? All in on the costumes which made quite the spectacle as they hung out in the crowd with others before their set.

They even redid that scene in Ghost (the movie with Demi Moore) where Swayze and her made that pottery but it was one of the priests and they were sensually taping a hockey stick.

Next level commitment there and they definitely won the award for best hoot set. ;)

Yah! I have another few to share in a post maybe next week but it has all the rough silliness of a highschool play. So much fun.

Seems like there are a couple really wild acts every year for the past 20 or so. Such a fun and unique event!
