#MarketFriday in the Bahamas!

IMG_2725.jpg

This post is for Market Friday hosted by everyone's favourite blockchain aunty @dswigle I definitely encourage you to follow her as she is one of the most humble and supportive leaders in this community. Hit the market wherever you are and take us with you on Friday.

In this edition, I am remembering a #MarketFriday post from a couple years ago when I visited a market in Mexico on vacation. Then, trying to reproduce it this year on Coco Cay in the Bahamas.

I still have tales to tell from my Grapplers Escape cruise late last month but one of our stops was an island in the Bahamas. From the top of the ship, you can see the clear ocean water and an island full of sun and fun.

With the hot weather, merciful cloud cover and breeze through the palm trees, it very well could be the perfect day.

Before getting to any island market, I had to make a stop at the beach. The water was warm and the floating bar surrounded by sun shelters, I almost didn't want to leave. Moments like these keep you warm in long Canadian winters.

Still, there is work to do and you can't laze on the beach all day. Let's check this map and see where the market is. Up thatta way past Chill Beach, and just before Chill Island Cabanas. Sounds pretty chill!

Success! We have found the Island Market! Surely this can't be the whole thing? An island whose sole purpose is to soak cash out of rich people by selling them drastically marked up bullshit. This is all you have for a market?

IMG_7790.jpg

Yep! Another hot walk to where the real market must be turned out to be another small portable with only beach wear and accessories. I already had my hat, 50, and flippy floppies so I just kept rolling back to the boat.

Not before one more beach beverage. Truly barely passable beer here but it all goes down alright on a beach in the Mediterranean.

Despite the slight market disappointment, it was the perfect day after all as we enjoyed the relaxing day at the beach. The ship was about done talking with her twin sister and ready to welcome us back on board. Floating hotels full of buffets and a market of its own. Not a bad Friday.

Usually that is the situation almost at every tourist place and island ranks much high in looting, as they would say, it takes extra effort. Best not to buy from there unless essential.

Indeed. Though, I do like to bring some little gifts home to the kids but I prefer buying from the real people and not these corporate kiosks. Amazing how I almost feel a sense of duty to spend a little more in countries like Mexico and Honduras just to help out the local economies.

Floating hotel to a very small island, surprised they made space to dock there....

Yup the original flare of lovely local is long gone, now peddlers push expensive cheaply made wares on tourists.

Doesn't sound like the !BEER went down all that well either, Oh well another day in the sunshine was fun!

I am just spoiled with my beer taste and sometimes forget that “lots” is my favourite kind! ;) as for space, the cruise line actually owns that island so making room for ships to dock would have been priority 1!

Actually sounds crazy to consider this is how capitalist markets have gone!

Looks a most enjoyable time to be had.

Such places are always my favourite. I think I wouldn't want to live in a country/region where winter lasts longer.

You know, longer winters do sound painful when you are not used to them but they are more of an inconvenience at times. Makes you appreciate the warm that much more and learn to love the snow.

Perhaps a little on the warm side but balances out the super cold winter days. Beach weather like this is fantastic no matter what.

It sounds like you had a great time, despite the disappointment with the market. The beach looked amazing, and I'm sure the beer was refreshing!

Oh my gosh, how fun. I have only been to the Bahamas once, many years ago. It looks much more mature now. Back in the day the markets were grass huts, as I recall. And no major ships went there. I sailed there with some friends from the Florida Keys, and it wasn't until years later that I thought of the horrible storm we endured (which broke a mast) that I realized I could have died.

Your trip looks so much more civilized! Ooh, a swim-up bar. Those are the best. And yes, we need those tropical get-aways to get us through our "up north" winters (Minnesota, in my case). It looks like you had a wonderful time!

@jayna! It feel like so long!

Truth be told, I would MUCH rather be part of a crew sailing to the islands than be one of 5000 cattle aboard a cruise ship. 150 likeminded grapplers and martial artists gathering on this cruise forced my hand and I made the most of it.

So awesome to hear from you again! I miss the #lifestylelounge fam.

Indeed! For a landlocked North American, island time feels extra special when you can arrange some.

Where is my favorite Market? Turkey!! Hey! You asked.

Oh, my friend! How could you? Drink that swill while having the Perfect Day on Cocoa Cay?* Say it isn't true! We all have those kinds of friends that coerce us into going places and doing things that are not in our normal routine. Which Royal ship did you claim for your own? It can be fun, but, not since Covid. Everything changed a little and well, I guess that is normal for safety and for the good of the cruise lines $$$ I cannot imagine in my wildest dreams how they are surviving. Honest.

So, tell me how you got hogtied into the trip. I went willingly. Twenty-four days but few people. At the end of the trip, I wanted to take my cabin attendant home with me.

I went to Cocoa Cay when they first opened up and boy, howdy! Why? Except I guess it makes sense to pay no port fees and look at all the money they collect for bringing people there. Now they actually have a ton of small ships bringing people there on a three-day trip so they pay no port fees, just the gas to get there. I think that is a great business plan to get out of debt.

It looks like you did okay there and well, we can both say we went there and did that, heck! You probably bought a t-shirt too. Thank you for taking us along!

#MarketFriday began as a way to reach out across the globe and learn about different cultures through their markets, especially local markets and farmers' markets, and eventually branched out and evolved over time from straight shopping to a cultural affair as it highlights how we differ and then again, how much we are alike. We have become a melting pot of culture, but it is still the Rituals, Festivals, food, architecture, and even your language/languages that separate us... Along with the fact that these things are normal for us. There are unwritten rules that rule our social behaviors. I see this as allowing for increased tolerance between cultures and nations, and opportunities to come together on an even playing ground. A strong culture can be beneficial to a country as it promotes unity, especially during a crisis, peaceful debate, and open dialogue. I have learned so much about all of you and it has been an amazing experience. I can only hope that learning about each other can help us work together for a peaceful world.

Oh, you devil!! That is how you get so many to follow you! Drop a little breadcrumb, promising more! I get it! I'm in! I need to fix my notifications. I never get any good ones anymore. It is like they have been erased and I have to search for everything I want to read.

Le sigh.

Life is so rough. Then you run out of beer. See? Tough life. Anywho, thank you for a 100% vote, my friend! It is the thought that counts! :)

Have a great week ahead!
