A Walk Thought the Winter Lights

wedswalk.png

For this Wednesday Walk, I will take you with me to explore the Lights On exhibits in a wintery Canadian town.

I have been teasing this one over the last month as I have walked past the installations during the day while they have been building it. Not yet while they have been live after dark when they are at their best.

Birds of the Island

IMG_7778.jpg

I started the night off headed for the island in town. Damn cold and snowy but that doesn't stop people from coming out when there is fun to be had.

IMG_7783.JPG

On the island, there was a wonderland of way larger than life birds and mushrooms. Of COURSE one of them was a Blue Jay for everyone's favourite baseball team.

IMG_7781.JPG

A little National League representation too with this big Cardinal. The kids are having so much fun running around them and interacting with the displays which changes the music.

IMG_7782.JPG

A giant snowy owl roosts regally on its own part of the island as the kids huddle beneath its wings.

Chronoharp!

Next, I headed down toward town square where the feature exhibit is called Chronoharp. quite the interactive light show and it is nice to see people form the community gather to enjoy it.

Nice to be hanging out right beside historic city hall in the middle of town. Nice backdrop.

This exhibit also features control points where you can interact and change the pattern of lights and music. The kids seem to be having fun being a part of the spectacle.

Silent Disco!

IMG_7799.JPG

As we were there, my buddy DJ Fuego started to spin the tracks for the silent disco.

IMG_7790.JPG

They handed out wireless headsets to everyone of all ages to listen to the dance music and warm up with a little movement. Funny to hear the tuneless shuffling when you take the headsets off then put them on to be reconnected by the music.

IMG_7796.JPG

In a town as small as this, I was sure that I would know more than a couple people among a couple hundred gathered so far. So nice to see so many new and unfamiliar faces gathering to celebrate outdoors, art and music together. Things that bind us in a world presently trying to divide us.

IMG_7795.JPG

You have to be a little creative when you are trying to get a bunch of hibernating Canadians out of their dens in the middle of winter.

IMG_7792.JPG

So glad I made the effort to get out and share this with my little one who absolutely loved it.

Thanks for sharing a little walk among the winter lights up here in the tundra.

Do you have offseason events in your town?

You sure know how to do winter, up there! Wow, such happy people, so warmly dressed on such a cold night :)

Definitely. If it were not for these installations of interactive art, the island and square would be deserted I bet. Coat a pretty penny of our tax dollars but activity, connection and fun are great things to spend money on.

My wife would have loved that owl. Imagine it is too cold for me up there, it is too cold for me where we are at.

Yah man. The high was -10 Celsius and headed way lower overnight. I bundle up nicely though and will spend an hour in the dog park out of duty.

That looks absolutely epic! I love interactive installations.

We had one before Christmas, a light trail around a local lake that had a series of drums you could play, which triggered pulses of light and different samples. It sounded great when various random people found a drum and started tapping out beats on them.

Times like this call for simple pleasures, playing and celebrating the outdoor with music. Hard to put a value on that!

Don’t they just, worrying times and music is the key. In fact I’ve been to a synth meet-up tonight and lots of wonderfully wacky music was played. Good times.

kids must be getting quite happy with those big birds, they seem fun

Chronoharp, that's pretty cool, you can make some nice photos out of it!

True. I snapped some abstract shots I might get to use for other things.
