Today i had opportunity to engage my aunty and mom in a talk about Religion and Morality in Nigeria Education System. My aunty is a teacher at the primary school level. Listening to their argument i noticed they are both bias on the topic because of their religious belief.

Currently in Nigeria education system, students at the primary level have opportunity to choice between two religion subject which are Christian religion studies or Islamic Religion knowledge. The curriculum also provide option for morality as a subject. But most school dump morality subject and adopt religion subject while some schools combine the two.

The essence of morality as a subject, its to make the student a free thinker. Moral subject is meant to equip the student to choice freely in life and also be responsible for their own freedom. Most parent in Nigeria support religion subject for their children, without analysis the opportunity in moral value subject. The goal of religion subject and morality subject is tailored towards the same purpose of making the student better individual in the society but the process of achieving it is different. Morality seek towards reasoning while religion is base dogmatics.

Most schools in Nigeria does not have qualified teschers to teach morality subject, most schools teach moral subject the way they teach religion subject. Its wrong to combine the two subject. They are both apple and orange you can't eat the two together, you need to choose one. Moral Value subject should be leave to the professional to do their job.

Religion is beautiful and sweet but we don't need to be biase about information and knowledge, we need to allow children to known their right, this will allow them to make choice and also be responsible for the choice they make. Religion subject will subject the children to fear, take away their reasoning ability by giving them a dogmatic way of life.

This topic is open for debate and argument you can droop your comment.
