Worklife - Watching the pressure of a project
It is crazy to watch what is going on at one of the sites where we are luckily not heavily involved. Because we did a small bit of work there, I am on their Whatsapp group so I get to see all the drama unfold.
And all that seems to happen is drama! More than 80% of the communication on that group is negative and revolves around giving fines to the Contractor companies for doing things that are against the rules, pretty much the moment they decide that it is against the rules, or hurrying Contractors up and giving them fines for not finishing in time.
As a Health and Safety Officer I am shocked at the focus of production to the exclusion of safety! Someone is going to get seriously hurt on this site still.
I see photos where someone is moaning about property damage but the workers are completely unprotected.
In the above picture there is an incident... there is a burst pipe or fitting, water is fountaining over the floor. The guy in the picture is trying to protect his tools and stock from the water. Meanwhile there are other hazards at play, like the electrical lead on the floor.
The comment on the group to all this is: "Wtf?"
And another comment about fines for using the counter as a work station... nothing about isolation, planning, containment, inspection... and this is why they will continue to have problems.
When there is pressure like this on a site, the pressure causes mistakes. In this case it has caused delays and property damage. In other cases, it results in injuries and even fatalities!
This is to be avoided on projects at all costs.
Have you experienced something similar at your place of work where the pressure start impacting quality, performance and safety? I would like to hear!
Thank you for reading my post!
Cheers!
@zakludick
I know the feeling but lucky it doesnt happen at the shop that much, we are only six ppl working there but some times its so full of cars that everyone starts to rush and cut corners, I AM the one in charge of explaining customers what was done to their cars and when all that rush and cut corner happens, thats when I start getting calls after a car is deliver, the car now makes sounds it didnt, something was loose, missing, etc on top working at a car shop you have constant safety hazards, lucky we never had a serious accident, most of the time when I see this Im the one who puts the foot down and tell everyone to take their time and do things right because clients have to wait no matter what safety and quality is first but it does happen from time to time, besides Im the one looking like a fool after delivering a car that is suppose to be almost perfect
Exactly! Rather slow down and do things properly. We all want to be able to go home and to come back to work tomorrow and be renumerated for our efforts.
One of my friends is a mechanic and the other day he was underneath a car when another car came and drove over his foot!
Oh shite! That looks like a shocking situation! Literally!
Aslong as it's not your doing buddy, just duck and dive when the bullets start flying!
Goodluck bud, but that is something I assume you are more than use to seeing!
Haha. Yeah, nothing to do with my work. I just see the potential accidents the whole time...
And by the looks of it, it can be fatal ones as well!
Yup. Thus was not even the worst one.
