Warhammer 40k - Unit Review Library 152 - Astra Militarum, Ogryn Squad
They are big, they are tough, they are... dumb as two bricks. Ogryn are Abhuman servants of the Emperor.
Hello everyone! Zak Ludick here from Cape Town, South Africa and this is a Warhammer 40k - The Great Unit Review Wheel! post!
Now known as the Unit Review Library!
What is it all about? It is not there to just give a stat. It is there to give MY review of the unit!
Also this has become quite the Challenge! With so many units to review in the game the consensus in the hobby community is that I will not have enough time to review all of the Datasheets before the new edition of Warhammer 40,000 came out.
I should have started when 10th edition launched!
469 days since the start of 10th Edition.
This is Review #152, I am 317 reviews behind! (Lowest I have been is 314 behind)
January 2025 we are expecting Astra Militarum and Aeldari codexes as explained Here, so time to focus on THOSE Datasheets!
Astra Militarum, Ogryn Squad
10th Edition Index
Ogryn are a "stable mutation" abhuman race. Meaning that they descended from humans and are bred this way. Over the course of successive breeding, they have a genetic makeup and taxonomy that classifies them now as a sub-species of Human.
Which get used in the Imperial Guard, ahem, Astra Militarum!
Ogryns are stupid though, so they implant chips into the leader's brain to make it easier to command him, so he can command his squad. The leader is called a Bone 'ead.
They also have trigger limiters built into those guns, otherwise they would be out of ammo too fast.
At 65pts for 3 of them and $62.50 to buy three.
You can also field units of 6 for 130pts.
Let's check their stats!
Stats
Movement 6"
Toughness 6
Save 5+(armor/invul/Feel No Pain) *Invul vs Ranged only
Wounds 3
Ld 7+
OC 1
Weapons
No Options to confuse you here. They all have Ripper guns!
Ranged:
Ripper Gun
18" Range, 3 Shots, Hitting on 4+. S5, AP-1 and 2 Damage each.
Rapid Fire 3 (They gain an additional 3 Attacks when within 9" of the target)
Melee:
Ripper Gun
4 Attacks, Hitting on 3+. S6, AP -1 and 1 Damage each.
Wargear Abilities
Brute Shield
The bearer has a 4+ Invul save.
Slabshield
The Bearer gains +1 Wound.
Abilities
Feel No Pain 6+ (for each damage suffered, roll a dice, on a 6, ignore the damage)
Point-blank Barrage
Each time a model in this unit shoots, if it is the closest target, increase the AP of the Ripper Guns by 1.
At 9" from a target, a unit of 3 of them would have 18 Attacks, hitting on 4+, S5, AP-2 and 2 Damage! Nice!
The only clunky thing here is that it says "Model" and not "Unit" which means a guy in the back on the unit could be in range of another target... so that needs to be considered.
Thoughts
I think that they are fun to have. I don't yet know of any specific exploits that could make them better. But something they bring to a Guard army is a unit with a different statline and thus, needing a different approach to dealing with them. They can do surprising amounts of damage if ignored.
That makes 7 Aeldari Datasheets Reviewed putting them on 7.86 Completed. The total Completed is 15.65% Complete! Can I review them all?!
Thank you for reading!

It's fun to play the Ogryn in Darktide. Big, dumb, and strong with a big gun!
Nice! I have not been doing much PC gaming... but I can imagine playing the Ogryn must be amazing!

Definitely wants some Ogryn for my AM
Noice! Indeed.
I see Johnathan is playing with a bunch of them at Nats this weekend!
