Warhammer 40k - Detachment Review 3 - World Eaters - Berzerker Warband

Source

Hello everyone!

Part of the Review Challenge is to Review all of the Detachment Rules. I have already done the Army Rule for the World Eaters, so this post is going to deal with their very first and only Detachment that the World Eaters had for a very long time.

Only during the Christman - Grotmas times did they get another Detachment, which I will deal with in a future post.

Army Rule Recap

Blessings of Khorne is when you roll eight D6's at the start of the Battle Round and then use the results of that roll to activate up to two Blessings for the remainder of the Battle Round.

Now you pick the Berzerker Warband as your Detachment and then gain access to the below rules!

Detachment Rule - Relentless Rage

If a World Eaters unit is selected to fight, if that unit had made a Charge move that turn, add +1 Strength and +1 Attacks to the melee weapons of that unit!

Thoughts

This seems like such a simple thing to gain but it can be massive!

The World Eaters are already a Close Combat favouring army. Adding to this another bonus for when they charge, can swing the game for them massively. It also means that if you are an opponent like me, who studies your opponent's rules, that it is something you need to try take away from the World Eaters!

Have extra Strength means wounding the opponent is easier. Having more attacks to do it means more success in hurting the opponent.

But that's not all!

Enhancements

Every Detachment has their own Enhancements to put on Characters. You cannot put 2 Enhancements on 1 hero, Epic Heros cannot take theim either and you are limited to 3 of the 4.

Here are the Enhancements for the Berzerker Warband:

Berzerker Glaive - 25pts

World Eaters model only. Add 1 to the Attacks and Damage characteristics of melee weapons equipped by the bearer.

This would work great on a number of models in the army. One of the coolest would be on the Khorne Lord in Juggernaught of Khore.

Favoured of Khorne - 20pts

Once per battle, when you make a Blessings of Khorne roll, before doing anything else, the bearer can use this Enhancement. If it does, discard all of the dice from that roll and make a new Blessings of Khorne roll. This new roll does not count as a re-roll, so any rules that enable you to re-roll or manipulate individual dice (e.g. Icon of Khorne) can still be used.

So this is 20pts to make sure that you have a really good chance at never having a very terrible roll of 8D6.

Helm of Brazen Ire - 25pts

Each time an attack is allocated to the bearer, halve the Damage characteristic of that attack.

Enhancement for a Daemon Prince with Wings maybe? Ouch!

Battle-lust - 25pts

You can select the bearer’s unit for the Heroic Intervention Stratagem for 0CP, and can do so even if you have already targeted a different unit with that Stratagem this phase.

Heroic Intervention means that when the enemy charges into combat near you, you may also charge into combat against them as a response, if they are near enough. Usually this costs a Command Point, but not for this model and his unit.

Stratagems

Stratagems are used in the battle as an elective rule that can be employed in crucial moments. All armies have access to Universal Stratagems but each Detachment has their very own Stratagems that they can use.

This is what the Bridgehead can do...

Blood Offering - 1CP

This can be used in any phase and is used on a World Eaters unit that was just destroyed while within range of an objective marker.

This objective is now "Sticky" and remains under your control until an enemy takes control of the objective.

So this is useful for when a far-away objective you have a unit on is attacked and that unit is shot to death. Then do the Blood Offering and keep your control and force the enemy to come to that objective if they wish to control it!

For the Skull Throne! - 1CP

Used in the Fight Phase when attacking a unit with the Monster, Vehicle or Character Keyword - Add +1 to the to Wound roll.

Khorne Cares Not... - 2CP

Used in the Fight Phase after the enemy has selected the targets of its attacks.

Used on one of your units that was targeted by those attacks.

Those attacks do -1 Damage to this unit.

This is a Stratagem used when the World eaters are caught in a charge by the enemy, especially when they wield Damage 2 weapons that would instantly kill Berzerkers. Shifting them to Damage 1 would greatly reduce the damage being wrought on that unit.

Damage can only be reduced to a minimum of 1 so you can still suffer dead by a thousand papercuts!

Apoplectic Frenzy - 1CP

Used in the movement phase when making an Advance move. Do not roll D6 to Advance, just add 6 to the unit's movement.

Auto 6 Advance is great for when you activate Unbridled Bloodlust for an Move + Advance + Charge combo!

Gory Massacre - 1CP

Used in your fight phase when a unit of yours has Charged and destroyed an enemy unit. In your opponent's next command phased, every unit within 6" of that unit must take a Battle Shock test. If below half, this test is done with a -1 to leadership.

Seems rather situational. You need to both be charging AND kill a unit. So either you are looking for a weak unit or a garuantee win, to then force the enemy to take Battle Shock tests.

However, you only need to activate it and spend the CP if the unit is successful and you want to trigger Gory Massacre from that unit.

For the Blood God! - 1CP

Used in the Fight phase after a World Eaters unit has destroyed an enemy unit. This is then used to make a Blessings of Khorne roll of 8D6 and used to activate a third Blessing.

You still cannot duplicate but you can now have three Blessings activated for the Battle Round.

Conclusion

The Berzerker Warband has a very simple, yet powerful Detachment bonus. It also has some very strong and simple Engancements for Characters in your army.

Meanwhile, some of the Stratagems are a bit situational and require you to kill the enemy, there are others that are just simple and quite effective.

These give the Warband some flexibility. I would say that this is a strong Detachment.
