Warhammer 40k - Detachment Review 19 - Chaos Daemons, Plague Legion

Source

Hello everyone! Zak Ludick here from Cape Town, South Africa and this is a Warhammer 40k - Datasheet Review post!

What is it all about? It is not there to just give a stat. It is there to give MY review of the unit in the game of Warhammer 40,000

The last of the Indexes! A new challenge!

Right, I am finally ahead and by my best estimations as I explained in this Post, I should be able to keep ahead of the release curve and get the remainder of the Indexes reviewed before those Codex releases.

So I embark on a new challenge. I have calculated that there are roughly 148 reviews to do. I have chosen my frequency and have given myself 96 days to review them all.

Today is Day 50/96.
I have reviewed 71/148.

Time elapsed: 52.08%
Review Completion: 47.97%
Oof... can I still recover?

Hobby Fund - Working myself into the clear

With my hobby posts, I generate a hobby fund. 50% of the income goes into the fund. At the moment I put all my HBD earned from Warhammer posts into my alt account @zakl.hobbyfund.

I am collecting funds in the following ways:

  • Blogging about Warhammer to earn HBD
  • Accepting donations - Can be sent directly to @zakl.hobbyfund in HBD
  • Selling some of the collection to friends.

At the current count I am paying off some hobby debts. I still have $226 to pay off!

Every bit counts!

Back to the review!

Army Rule Recap

The Shadow of Chaos Rule was all about board control, gaining wounds and causing some mortal wounds to units within your Shadow of Chaos.

This Detachment will add something to that!

Detachment Rules

Melancholic Miasma

While an enemy is within 9" range of a Nurgle Daemon army AND within the Nurgle Daemons's Shadow of Chaos, that can be affected by this ability.

In each player's Command Phase, this Daemon player can select one enemy unit that must take a Battle-shock test.

Thoughts

This is sort of UNDERWHELMING compared the the Tzeetch Daemon Detachment ability from yesterday... yet... I will see by the end of this Review what I think. Perhaps there are some good synergies with causing Battle-shock... let's see...

Enhancements

Every Detachment has its own Enhancements to put on Characters. You cannot put 2 Enhancements on 1 hero, Epic Heroes cannot take them either, and you are limited to 3 of the 4.

Here are the Enhancements for the PLague Legion.

Cankerblight (Aura) - 15pts

Nurgle Daemon model only.

When a unit (excluding Monsters and Vehicles) within 6" of this model fails a Battle-shock test, the bearer can use this Enhancement and one model in that unit is destroyed (chosen by the controlling player).
When the bearer does this, the army cannot do Mortal Wounds using the Daemonic Terror rule...

Right... so there is already a synergy between Melancholic Miasma and an Enhancement... instant death is harsh but you could do more damage in Mortal wounds if there are many enemies on the field within range of the Shadow... however... when facing tough non-vehicle/monster units it might be something the Daemon should try...

Droning Shroud (Aura) - 35pts

Nurgle Monster Daemon only. While Nurgle Daemons are within 6" of this model, that unit can only be targeted by a ranged attack if the attacker is within 18"

At first I thought that this is an expensive Enhancement... but the rule totally makes up for it. It is an Auro, meaning that it affects the bearer as well. A Great Unclean One you cannot shoot at until it is on top of you... plus all of its buddies... nasty!

Font of Spores (Aura) - 20pts

Nurgle Monster Daemon only. Nurgle Daemons within 6" of this model improve their Armor Penetration on all their Weapons by 1.

This is also very powerful. It works for both shooting and melee, as long as it is a Nurgle Daemon unit.

Its too bad that the Nurgle Daemons do not have much in the way in shooting however... ther is the Soul Grinder... if it follows the Nurgle Monster around... could be good.

Maggot Maws - 15pts

Nurgle Daemon model only.

In your shooing phase, select an enemy unit within 6" of this model. That enemy must take a Battle-shock test. Then roll one D6. On a3+ that enemy unit suffers D3 Mortal Wound and the army cannot use Daemonic Terror.

So... a bit confusing... but this means only one unit of the enemy takes a Battleshock test but regardless of pass or fail, they take the D3 Mortal Wounds. This would be a fine trade off if it didn't happen in the Shooting phase... Battle-shock happens in the Command-Phase of the opponent... now you are using this in the Daemon Shooting phase. It should say that the following Command Phase, the Daemonic Terror rule does not inflict Mortal Wounds... But anyway.

This one is a waste!

Stratagems

Stratagems are used in the battle as an elective rule that can be employed in crucial moments. All armies have access to Universal Stratagems but each Detachment has their very own Stratagems that they can use.

This is what the Plague Legion can do.

Seeping Virulence - 1CP

Used in the Fight Phase on a unit about to strike.

That unit scores Critical Hit rolls on a 5+ instead of 6+.

Nurgle Daemons come with Lethal Hits... so this is a clear way to make their Daemons hit harder.

Fever Visions - 1CP

Used in the Shoot or Fight Phase on a Nurgle Daemon unit.

Add 1 to the Hit roll and one enemy unit hit by these attack must take a Battle-shock test.

So, unless it is used in melee, it would be best to do this on a Nurgle Soul Grinder

Foetid Resurgence - 2CP

Used in te Command Phase on a Nurgle Unit.

This will heal the target unit depending on what sort of unit it is:
Battleline: Return D3 destroyed models.
Other non-Monster, non-Battleine units: Return 1 destroyed Model.
Monster: Regain D3+1 Wound

Sinmple, powerful but expensive at 2CP for this ability. Will see some units when it is really needed but may loose preference to Strats that are more active than reactive.

Rot and Renewal - 1CP

Used during the Daemon Movement phase or Charge Phase. A Nurgle unit from their army can move through terrain features.

Right, all the other Daemon armies had abilities that does the exact same.

Murkshadows - 1CP

Used in in the Daemon player's movement phase on a Infanty Nurgle unit.

This unit adds 5" to its movement.

So... 10" movement Plague Bearers! This is practically speaking an Advance and Charge ability but the Advance was an auto-5!

This is a great stratagem! I would be more openminded at how fast the Daemon can move one unit of Plaguebearers now.

Plague of Woes - 1CP

Used in the opponent's Command Phase before selecting a target for Melancholic Miasma.
Select a Nurgle Daemon unit form your army.
Until the end of the phase, after doing Melancholic Miasma, select one other enemy unit within 9" of the selected Nurgle unit and that enemy must take a Battle-shock test.

This rule is written really klunky and honestly, this is the sort of thing that makes new players struggle so much.

This rules is written in this sequence so it forces you to spend the CP to use this Strat before you see what the result is of your Melancholic Miasma ability. That's all.

So the simple sequence is:
Decide to do 2x Batleshocks and spend the CP. Select your one target.
Select and do the Melancholic Miasma on a unit.
Do the Battle-shock on the other unit.
Done.

It is ok... it is very targeted Battle-shock forcing which can often be very good.

Conclusion

This Detachment is not bad. The Detachment ability is still not exceedingly overpowered but the detachment has some combinations of enhancements and stratagemsnt that can definately cause trouble for the enemy!

Thank you for reading this post!
