Warhammer 40k - Detachment Review 16 - Chaos Daemons, Blood Legion

Hello everyone! Zak Ludick here from Cape Town, South Africa and this is a Warhammer 40k - Datasheet Review post!
What is it all about? It is not there to just give a stat. It is there to give MY review of the unit in the game of Warhammer 40,000
The last of the Indexes! A new challenge!
Right, I am finally ahead and by my best estimations as I explained in this Post, I should be able to keep ahead of the release curve and get the remainder of the Indexes reviewed before those Codex releases.
So I embark on a new challenge. I have calculated that there are roughly 148 reviews to do. I have chosen my frequency and have given myself 96 days to review them all.
Today is Day 47/96.
I have reviewed 68/148.
Time elapsed: 48.95%
Review Completion: 45.94%
Ooff... I am losing here..... Army Detachments take a bit to do!
Hobby Fund - Working myself into the clear
With my hobby posts, I generate a hobby fund. 50% of the income goes into the fund. At the moment I put all my HBD earned from Warhammer posts into my alt account @zakl.hobbyfund.
I am collecting funds in the following ways:
- Blogging about Warhammer to earn HBD
- Accepting donations - Can be sent directly to @zakl.hobbyfund in HBD
- Selling some of the collection to friends.
At the current count I am paying off some hobby debts. I still have $226 to pay off!
Every bit counts!
Back to the review!
Army Rule Recap
The Shadow of Chaos Rule was all about board control, gaining wounds and causing some mortal wounds to units within your Shadow of Chaos.
This Detachment will add something to that!
Detachment Rules
Murdercall
When an enemy ends a Normal or Advance move within 6" of a Khorne Legiones Daemonica unit from your army, it can make a Surge Move of up to D6" and must move towards that enemy unit. This move CAN be used to make contact with the enemy unit.
Thoughts
This is a crazy rule. It means to really work right around Khorne Blood Legions would mean that you cannot dare to move so close to them. If you did, then you risk having the Khorne Daemons closing in and making contact before you even manage to shoot them or charge them.
Blood Tainted
If a Khorne Daemon unit destroys an enemy unit that is within range of an objective marker, that objective marker becomes sticky and will remain yours until the enemy can put a unit within range of the objective and have a greater control value.
Thoughts
Obviously good. To hold objectives is to win battles... to have a huge drawback for holding an objective really helps the Blood Legions.
Enhancements
Every Detachment has its own Enhancements to put on Characters. You cannot put 2 Enhancements on 1 hero, Epic Heroes cannot take them either, and you are limited to 3 of the 4.
Here are the Enhancements for the Blood Legion.
Slaughterthirst (Aura) - 25pts
Khorne model only. Khorne Daemons units within 6" of this model get Lance on their weapons. (Excluding Monsters)
Lance is the ability for a +1 to Wound in melee on the turn that you charge. This is something that seems designed to let Bloodletters punch above their weight class!
Fury's Cage - 20pts
Khorne Monster models only. Each time the bearer fights, it can choose to use this ability. If it does it will suffer D3+1 Mortal Wounds (so 2-4 Wounds) and until the end of the turn this model will re-roll Hit rolls and Wounds rolls.
"Khorne cares not from where the blood flows!" It is sacrificial but it could cause you to gain massive damage boosts in return!
Brazenmaw - 15pts
Khorne Daemons only. Add 2 to the Charge rolls made for the bearer's unit.
Nothing complex here... make them better at succeeding a charge! 2" is sometimes a large advantage when it comes to making contact or piling in far enough.
Gateway Unto Damnation - 10pts
Khorne Daemon Monster models only.
This model's Deadly Demise triggers on a 2+ instead of a 6+.
If this model destroyed any enemy units in this battle, this model's Deadly Demise becomes D3+3 mortals instead of any Deadly Demise ability it has.
I think this is an auto-include for 10pts if you are playing a Bloodthirster or a Daemon Prince of Chaos with wings, dedicated to Khorne.
Those units have a D6 or a D3 Deadly Demise, respectively. When they cill something, the Bloodthirster gets a 4-6 result instead of a 1-6 result, while the Prince gets a 3 added to its damage for Deadly Demise which is a great deal!
Stratagems
Stratagems are used in the battle as an elective rule that can be employed in crucial moments. All armies have access to Universal Stratagems but each Detachment has their very own Stratagems that they can use.
This is what the Daemonic Incursion can do.
Wrath Undeniable - 1CP
Used in the Fight Phase on a Khorne Daemon unit that was selected as a target. Until the end of the phase, this unit gets a 4+ fights on Death.
A good response to Fights First or Charges.
Gore-hungry Onslaught - 1CP
Used in the Movement Phase or Charge Phase on a Khorne unit. Until the end of the phase this model can move through terrain features.
Usually, Ruins are only breachable by Infantry and Beasts. No doubt, this ability is going t used by Khorne Monsters to just bash straight through terrain and end up charging units that were trying to hide behind it!
Skulls Beget Blood - 1CP
Used in the the owning player's Shooting phase on a Khorne Infantry or Khorne Mounted unit that is not in Engagement Range of an enemy.
Select an enemy unit within 8" and visible to this unit that is not in Engagment Range of enemy units.
Roll 6x D6 Dice. For each 4+, the unit suffers a Mortal Wound.
An unexpected shooting/grenade strat ability! Mortal Wounds suddenly from Khorne Daemons!
Blood Begets Skulls - 1CP
Used in the Charge Phase on a Khorne unit in your army. That unit can Charge in a turn that they Advanced.
Simple and clean and fast!
Fool’s Flight - 2CP
Used in your opponent's Movement phase on a Khorne unit where an enemy has fallen back and the Khorne unit is within 6" of that unit and is eligible to charge.
The unit charges but does not get any charge bonuses.
It is expensive and situational, but it does mean that tricky units that simply pull out of combat are pulled back into combat. Which is good.
Sheathed In Brass - 1CP
Used in the enemy Shooting phase on a Khorne unit that was just argeted by shooting. Until the end of the phase, that unit has a 3+ Save.
Basically, when there are a high volume of low AP shots coming in, this is useful. Mnay Daemons have no Armor and a 5+ invul, but when you tick wounds on these Daemons... that is usually their weakness. The 3+ save helps.
Conclusion
As one would expect of Khorne Daemon armies... this Detachment favours a Khorne heavy melee army with a bit of shooting. There is definately enough Khorne units in the Index to make up the slots needed to build a whole Blood Legion.
There are a lot of leaders that can lead Blood Letters and with Blood Thirsters, Daemon Princes and the like... plenty Heavy Hitters!
Thank you for reading this post!
