Because I was lost, or rather, immersed in the pages of this book, I forgot how stories begin... Oh, sorry, I remembered...

Once upon a time there was a book that dreamed of telling stories for children.

Children and parents in Cuba long for the arrival of the Book Fair in our country. Almost every year around this time, bookstores are stocked with the book Once Upon a Time, a compilation of universal classic children's stories and poems by the Spanish writer Herminio Almendros.

This is a book that has been published, printed, and reprinted many times. I have in my hands an edition from 2010, its fourteenth edition, and another from 2019, which would be its seventeenth edition. As I already mentioned, there are some reprints of previous editions.

Herminio was born in Spain at the end of the 19th century, in 1878. He is a writer, editor, educator, and cultural promoter. After studying teaching in Madrid, she moved to Cuba and joined the teaching profession in the largest of the Antilles.

Her resume includes the books Oros viejos, Lecturas ejemplares, nuestro José Martí, and of course Había una vez.

In this title, we find various versions, as I explained before, of classic stories such as The Little Golden Hen, The Three Little Pigs, Martina the Cockroach, The Three Bears, Little Red Riding Hood, among others.

This book is a little surprise for the reader. They imagine that our parents are the first to tell us stories, then comes this collection of stories, the same ones our parents tell us with their own words. What a wonderful gift!

We find it hard to believe that the bedtime stories we were told are in a book. And, like every child, we think our parents were the ones who created these stories, which, for the time being, bear another author's name and are in a book.

In my personal experience, I thought someone else had heard my mom or my grandmother telling me stories at night and had appropriated the stories.

Here we find two versions of the Tin Soldier, one made into a beautiful story, where he appears anonymously, and the other version is in verse written by Tristan Klingsor.

And what did I just find? Puss in Boots, a well-known story adapted for film, radio, and television in different versions, for both children and adults. Whoever didn't enjoy that story, I still do.

Tom Thumb is another of the stories included in this book, adapted by Disney and others such as: The Stubborn Goats, The Wedding Rooster, Cinderella (in many versions), The Fisherman and His Wife, Snow White, and The Ugly Yard, just to name a few.

However, I want to share a poem by Álvaro Yunque, which is also included in this book.

When I Grow Up

Mom: When I grow up,
I'm going to make a ladder
so high it reaches the sky
to go pick up stars.

I'll fill my pockets
with stars and comets,
and I'll go down to distribute them
to the children at school.

But I'm going to bring you,
Mommy, the full moon,
so you can light up the house
without spending money on electricity.

A beautiful poem. With this, and leaving open the invitation to meet again in the pages of a book, I say goodbye.

Por andar perdida, mejor dicho, sumergida en las páginas de este libro, se me olvidó como es que empiezan los cuentos… Ah, perdón, ya me acordé…

Había una vez un libro que soñaba contar historias para los niños.

Niños y padres en Cuba anhelan la llegada de la Feria del Libro en nuestro país. Casi todos los años surten las librerías por esta fecha con el libro Había una vez, compilación de cuentos y poemas clásicos universales para los niños que hizo el escritor español Herminio Almendros.

Este es un libro que se ha editado e impreso y reimpreso muchas veces. En mis manos tengo una edición del año 2010, su decimocuarta edición y otra del año 2019, sería la decimoséptima edición, y como ya les conté con algunas reimpresiones de algunas ediciones ya hechas con anterioridad.

Herminio nació en España a finales del siglo XIX, en el año 1878. Escritor, editor, pedagogo y promotor cultural. Después de estudiar magisterio en Madrid se traslada a Cuba y se integra a la pedagogía en la mayor de Las Antillas.

Carga en su curriculum con los libros Oros viejos, Lecturas ejemplares, nuestro José Martí y por supuesto Había una vez.

En este titulo encontramos diversas versiones como ya les expliqué antes de cuentos clásicos como La gallinita dorada, Los tres cerditos, La cucarachita Martina, Los tres osos, Caperucita roja, entre otros.

Este libro es una pequeña sorpresa para el lector. Se imaginan que nuestros padres son los primeros que nos hacen historias, luego llega esta colección de cuentos, los mismos que nuestros padres nos narran con sus palabras y que regalo tan maravilloso.

Nos cuesta creer que los cuentos que nos hicieron para dormir están en un libro. Y, como todo niño pensamos que nuestros padres fueron quienes crearon estas historias que de momento tienen el nombre de otro autor y están en un libro.

En mi experiencia personal pensé que otra persona había escuchado a mi mamá o a mi abuela haciéndome cuentos en las noches y se había apropiado de los cuentos.

Aquí encontramos dos versiones del Soldadito de plomo, una hecha un cuento precioso, donde aparece anónimo y la otra versión es en versos escritos por Tristan Klingsor.

Y qué me acabo de encontrar. El gato con botas, conocida historia, llevada al cine, a la radio y a la televisión en diferentes versiones, tanto para niños como para adultos. Quien no disfrutó de ese cuento, yo, lo disfruto todavía.

Pulgarcito es otro de los cuentos recogidos en este libro, versionado por Disney y otros como: Los chivitos porfiados, El gallo de bodas, Cenicienta, en muchísimas versiones, El pescador y su mujer, Blanca Nieve y El patio feo, solo por mencionar algunos.

Sin embargo, quiero compartirles un poema de la autoría de Álvaro Yunque y que también está recogido en este libro.

Cuando sea grande

Mamá: cuando sea grande
voy a hacer una escalera
tan alta que llegue al cielo
para ir a coger estrellas.

Me llenaré los bolsillos
de estrellas y de cometas,
y bajaré a repartirlos
a los chicos de la escuela.

Pero a ti voy a traerte,
mamita, la luna llena,
para que alumbres la casa
sin gastar en luz eléctrica.

Precioso poema. De esta manera y dejando abierta la invitación para encontrarnos nuevamente en las paginas de un libro, me despido de ustedes.
