The system practiced in my nation.

When I first saw this week's edition one prompt, I was a little discouraged about writing on it because it would bring certain memories I'm trying to forget, "What am I even saying?" Well, follow me till the end of this post. I was supposed to write about it yesterday. You might be wondering what happened "It's literally nothing" or let me say I was trying to put a lot of thoughts into it before sharing my opinion because when it comes to anything that has to do with the government or anything relating to the Nigerian system of government, I always try to separate myself from it.

I hear people saying "Nigeria is a democratic nation," then I will be like Demo what? I think we should go back to watch the demo again because it doesn't contain the last alphabet, which is the "cratic", with everything that has been happening, and more are likely to still happen.

Before I go further, permit me to give the simplest definition of democracy, which I was taught in school, and I quote "Democracy is a government of the people, by the people, and for the people." Special thanks to Abraham Lincoln for this simple definition of the term democracy. Now let's bring it to my own understanding, democracy is a system of government where the power rests with the people, in all the definitions of democracy, the major thing that was emphasized is the "People".

If you go further, it still tells us that democracy is a Greek word which means "power and people." I just loved the fact that the major item in the definition of democracy is th people, and it emphasizes it.

Talking about my nation "there is a battle between democracy and my nation" I don't know if Nigeria is practicing democracy or its democracy that is being practiced in Nigeria, because looking at the definition of democracy, I don't think Nigeria falls into anything like that, but then I also think it says in the papers that Nigeria is a democratic nation.

With everything that I've said so far, there is only one thing I can point and that is the point that the government is to be shaped by the people but the case of my nation is different, in my nation is the government that is being embodied with the power of shaping the citizens in the nation and as a citizen our rights are being lost. Do we still have rights in Nigeria? Because our rights aren't respected, but rather are being dismissed.

In that case, it simply means that it's the people who possess the fundamental right to elect the leader they want and not the other way round, like my aunt will always say in Nigeria, we don't carry out elections, what we carry out is selection. Then, after the selection, they now come out to conduct an election where the people's vote won't count.

Sometimes when I look at these I feel like Nigeria is bigger than what they are using it for, I know if the name Nigeria has a voice on its own "it would have spoken out" but then it doesn't, the only voices we have is that of the citizens but everyone is seeking their safety and security because this country can be something else when it wants to be. I just hope someday Nigeria will practice real democracy.

Thanks for reading 🧡

Until our votes really count and we have good, transparent and accountable leaders this is the democracy we will keep running, democracy that only favors the elites.

I pray things change someday.

Thanks for sharing.

The most funny aspect of this is that, our government are still part of the people too, they are not aliens. The issue with Nigeria democracy is that, the power only resides in the ruling class, so does the wealth. Until we find a way to ensure the provision is equally distributed among every citizen of Nigeria and our judiciary is independent, free from the influence of political tycoons, only then would we be able to enjoy the benefits provided by democracy.

Like, do you get? Our government is part of the people, yet they don't behave like it at all.

Yeah because they belong to the upper class and the masses in the lower class.
