The positive way.
Competitions aren't always unhealthy, but then the truth is that they can be unhealthy when they want to be as well. Often, when we hear the word competition, it is always the negative aspect that comes to our mind, and forgetting that certain competitions can be healthy for one to improve themselves.
A little story: a few years back after graduating from the university, I thought that was the end of my reading career, like I didn't find myself opening books again not just books that are related to my career "I didn't open anything that was called a book" so one day I went out with my cousin and her friends were talking about the number of books they've read since they graduated from the university and how these books have impacted their lives in diverse ways.
The moment they started talking about those books, I became speechless, because I didn't have anything to contribute to the conversation any longer, so all I could do was keep quiet and listen to them unveil those ideas they got from the books.
Then, after a while of entering into the realm of books, they turned to me and said, "We are so sorry we left you hanging." Did I feel bad about being left hanging? Well, I was hanging because I didn't read, and it was nobody's fault; rather, it was mine. I've known myself to be someone who can jump into healthy conversations without being noticed.
I asked them to recommend a book for me to read and to my greatest surprise they did and that led to a funny argument between them because some were saying the book wasn't that good and the other was supporting the motion while I was just sitted in their midst feeling like a boss with my invisible glasses on.
After that funny heated argument, I took record of the books that were recommended and started my reading journey, when I first started I noticed that I've been losing out on certain things like being equipped with ideas, I've come to understand better that reading significantly benefits the brain by improving memories and reducing stress.
So competition doesn't always have to be unhealthy, the zeal and desire to improve on a thing isn't unhealthy, right? I've come to the conclusion that not all competition is unhealthy, some can be healthy to grow and improve oneself.
Now, certain competition can be unhealthy and toxic, and that is why we need to always create a balance when it's needed. How do I know when a competition is being toxic or unhealthy? I didn't know at first, but then with the level of knowledge I've attained so far, I've been able to understand better when a certain competition is becoming toxic. One thing is "constant comparison." I know how we all hate being compared to someone.
Constant comparison fosters rivalry wherever it's coming from. And it reduces one's self-esteem, telling you that you aren't good enough. Everyone is good enough, and the reason why everyone's good enough is different is attached to the truth that humans aren't the same, and our good enough can't be the same as well. Everyone is good enough in their unique way.
