Not in the books.

They say school can't teach you everything, and I totally agree. Some of the life-changing experiences we've learnt early in life weren't taught in school. I feel like those aren't included in the school curriculum and it isn't fair.

When I first saw this hive learners prompt, I smiled at first and let my thoughts flood my head so I could come up with something tangible, and here I am trying to share my thoughts about the subject matter. School is a nice and cool place to be, where we get to learn different things that are in the pages we flip through, but then what happens when we are faced with real-life situations that aren't in the books?

I've learnt a lot of things that aren't in the book that was taught in school that have shaped my life into the person I am today, and with time I believe there are still more things to come. And one of such things would be "personal finance". That is one crucial skill that is often missing from the school curriculum.

Often I ask myself this question, "How much of what I learnt at school do I use in my daily life?" I know nearly everyone is likely to say very little because when we come out of school we'd be faced with the real struggle of trying to make ends meet and most times what we studied isn't what we will end up doing in the real world, some changes are likely to take place "How painful could that be".

School didn't teach me how to manage my personal finances. Growing up, my mum would always tell me, "learn how to manage your money." A time will come when you'll be all alone, and certain situations will arise that you will be faced with certain financial decisions. Learning from now will help shape you, so when the time comes, you won't struggle.

I thought mum was saying those things because she didn't want me to spend my money. "Why?" But as I grew older, I came to understand the importance of what she said. Right now, I'm not gonna say I'm struggling with keeping my financial life in order, but I'm trying to make those necessary adjustments and ensure that my financial life is okay and stable.

I've put my financial life up there with the most useful things because it gives me freedom and fulfillment whenever I stare at it. Personal finances don't always mean monetary, though, but then it also gives me the ability to live life on my own terms without considering a third party.

One thing that I've lived by recently is never to find myself in debt. "I hate that word." I've made up my mind not to spend more than I earn, because if I spend more than I earn, where would the other money be coming from? "Maybe it will fall from heaven". I stay within my financial limit and do not exceed it like people from my part of the world would say "no do pass yourself".

Thanks for reading 🧡

School won't teach us everything that we need to know, including money. We have to find ways to grow financially. I love your determination.

School will not teach you about financial management and the likes. We got out to discover that on our own through experiences.
