Some nations have recently adopted openly belligerent policies, not only in their rhetoric but in their actions. Attacks and threats are now a daily occurrence; no region of the world is safe, especially in this "nuclear age," where the existing arsenal is enough to destroy the entire planet about 60 times—according to conservative estimates—or up to 150 times, according to the more daring ones. However, it doesn’t matter who is right: it makes no difference whether life on Earth is extinguished by one-sixtieth of the arsenal or one-hundred-and-fiftieth, as in the end, there will be no one left to judge or determine the outcome.

That is why today I wanted to look back at some of the songs that have spoken out against war since the 1960s. While countless tracks could have made the list, I have put together a selection based on both their success and my personal favorites. Here they are!

Por eso, hoy he querido recordar algunas canciones que han alzado la voz contra la guerra desde los años 60. Aunque hay infinidad de temas que podrían figurar en esta lista, he preparado una selección basada tanto en su éxito comercial como en mis gustos personales. ¡Aquí van!

Masters Of War | Maestros De La Guerra

This is one of Bob Dylan’s most direct and raw songs. Written during the winter of 1962-1963 and released on his second album, The Freewheelin' Bob Dylan, it was inspired by what became known as the Cuban Missile Crisis (October 1962). In this track, Dylan, a pacifist, reaches extremes he had never touched before; for that reason, he wrote the following in the album's liner notes:

"I've never written anything like that before. I don't sing songs which hope people will die, but I couldn't help it with this one. The song is a sort of striking out, a reaction to the last straw, a feeling of what can you do?"

Fue escrita en el invierno de 1962-1963 y publicada en su segundo álbum, The Freewheelin' Bob Dylan, inspirada por lo que se conoció como la Crisis de los Misiles en Cuba (octubre de 1962). If Dylan’s song was a frontal assault—clear and direct—this song is more of an “invitation.” Recorded in 1969 during his famous “Bed-In for Peace” in Montreal, John Lennon composed this anthem almost by “accident.” Faced with constant questions from the press about what he was trying to achieve with his protest, he simply replied: "Just give peace a chance." That phrase struck him so deeply that he decided to turn it into a song: a message without ideological or political complexities, just a call for peace. It was the first song he released outside of The Beatles.

Si la canción de Dylan era un ataque de frente, claro y directo, esta canción viene a ser más bien una “invitación”. Grabada en 1969 durante su famosa “encamada por la paz” (Bed-In) en Montreal, John Lennon compuso este himno casi por “accidente”. Ante las constantes preguntas de la prensa sobre qué buscaba con su protesta, él simplemente respondió: "Solo denle una oportunidad a la paz". Esa frase lo impactó a él mismo y decidió convertirla en canción: un mensaje sin profundidades ideológicas ni políticas, solo un llamado a la paz. We Want Peace | Queremos Paz

If Lennon was asking for a chance for peace, this song is a more direct, urgent, and global demand. Released in 2003 as a direct response to the invasion of Iraq, "We Want Peace" brought Lenny Kravitz together with musicians from diverse cultures, such as Iraqi pop star Kadim Al Sahir, Palestinian musician Simon Shaheen on strings, and Lebanese percussionist Jamey Haddad. Unlike other tracks that dwell on melancholy, this is an energetic anthem that demands immediate change. It serves as a reminder that, despite the decades that have passed since the 1960s, the world continues to shout the same slogan in the face of the same mistakes: WE WANT PEACE!.

Lanzada en 2003 como una respuesta directa a la invasión de Irak, "We Want Peace" unió a Lenny Kravitz con músicos de diversas culturas, como la estrella del pop iraquí Kadim Al Sahir, el músico palestino Simon Shaheen en las cuerdas y el percusionista libanés Jamey Haddad.
